When he joined the BBC in 1979, its Director General Mark Thompson says, his mother told him: “The BBC is anti-Catholic and anti-God’.” Another critic recently accused it of having “a materialist, mechanistic consensus which has rejected God.”
Thompson has just defended the BBC in a speech to Theos, which describes itself as a public theology think tank: “I believe that the BBC has maintained the daily and weekly presence of religion on its services with more consistency and commitment over decades than any other British media organization.” You can read the speech here.
Who’s right — Thompson or his mother?

The BBC is not anti-God, provided the God is a Muslim God, or a Buddhist God, or indeed any kind of god except a Christian God of the kind worshipped in the UK.
It would be simpler and more accurate to say that the BBC is anti-British and anti-social, since it preaches the Leftist dogma of statism and social division under the pretext of being “inclusive”.
- Posted by Mike TThe BBC is a subversive organisation which peddles the outdated Left-wing dogma its bosses learned at university in the 60s and 70s.
Religion in its various forms was originally designed as a mechanism to control human behaviour, usually containing a set of simple rules relating to hygiene and social interraction within a tribe. The control aspect was achieved by the concept of an invisible God as a supreme being whose will was interpreted and imposed upon the tribe by the priests and tribal chiefs. The rules have been corrupted over time to become little more than rituals of “belief” but religion retains its power as a unifying force within specific groups.
Religion therefore conflicts with the Left-wing dogma which holds that the state is the supreme authority, so
is denigrated by the BBC as a matter of policy to undermine the group loyalties which hamper the efforts of the state to be the sole source of authority in the lives of its citizens.
Young people at university today are fortunately less gullible than those of the late 20th century and the BBC will lose its Left-wing bias as these younger people displace the current dinosaurs.
- Posted by AndyI do not believe in God, but I cannot see any evidence that the BBC agrees with me. Not at all.
Why do I NOT belive in God? Put it this way: if you were a supernatural and omnipotent God, with all the powers needed to do miracles, etc., then why would you stand by and watch a child, for example, being horribly murdered?
If you have the power to intervene - then why not?
If I was standing on a street and I saw someone attacking a small child and attempting to murder them, I would step in and try to stop them: no questions asked, just a reaction to a potentially horrif and terrible crime.
And yet God lets this happen and does nothing every day of the year. With horrendous results.
That to me proves God does not exist. No way does God exist!
Atoms, molecules, the universe, the sun, the earth, organic life, the human brain, etc., ALL exist. God does not.
Sorry creations and all believers.
- Posted by TheTruthIs...The BBC are just scared of upsetting Muslims because they know how violent the “religion” is. Lets be honest they’ve said before that their number one priority is the employee and upsetting Muslims always follows with death threats and not just in this country
- Posted by JohnThe BBC is just anti-British and you only have to google or check http://tvlicenceresistance.info to see this
- Posted by Sao PauloAlthough it is not politically correct to stereotype people in NuLabour’s Britain, humans are of course wired by nature to stereotype people as part of their defence mechanism in order to recognise “friends” and smooth social interraction within groups or to recognise external threats.
This innate ability to recognise “types” of people tells us at a single glance most of what we need to know about them. Look at the picture of Greg Thompson for 2 seconds. Could he be anything OTHER THAN a Left-leaning self-styled “intellectual” who will always seek to impose his political views on other people?
No. And as other posters have correctly said, God gets in the way of the Leftist state in its attempts to monopolise control of the minds of its citizens. The BBC like any other organisation takes its bias from the views of its leader. So it can be nothing other than anti-God.
- Posted by PeterThis is another example of Religion causing a problem. I am not religious in any way. I dont believe in a supreme being or beings watching over us who control everything. But saying that I dont have any problem at all with people having faith in something. the problem I have is when they use that faith as an excuse, i.e. Jihads and Crusades. People say muslims are bad but Christians are worse, remember how this Country was Christianised?!? most of the country was killed to Christianise it. The KKK call themselves a Christian group. Muslims now have this reputation of being violent, they were percieved as violent by a foreign national paper and how did they react….with violence.
All this boil down to one fact. When anything is being considered one of the factors to be removed should be religion as its now a growing problem as apposed to some sort of sanctuary for believers. Im starting my own business and when recruiting staff im not going to ask potentials to state their religion, (If they say they’re a Jedi they will be immediately hired though) im just going to ask them to tick a box advising they will not allow their religion to interfere with their work….dont know if I’ll get away with that!
- Posted by King LouisOf course the BBC is anti-God. It is a Left wing propaganda tool which is anti-anything which acts as a stabilising influence in society.
Fronted by newsreaders and presenters with pretty faces and “caring” displays of affection towards children and animals etc, it is easy to miss the evil intent of its constantly repeated subliminal message, but it is carefully grafted into everything it broadcasts.
Sky peddles a similar message set by its proprietor, presumably to attract a particular audience to which the biased message appeals. The difference is that the public have a choice about whether or not they pay for Sky. The BBC offers no such choice.
It is a relic of the past which was hijacked long ago by an ideology of the past. Politicians are obviously unwilling or unable to control it, so it is left in the hands of dangerous people to use as they see fit. It should be broken up.
- Posted by Jasoni was part of the harold wilson revolution, and sneered at the then astablishment lap dog the bbc .i can recall the hysteria at the prospect of a margret thatcher government and later as i worked as an undercover agent for the national union or mine workers during the miners strike.looking back i was so passionate about my beliefs.although now a christian and living in usa the reality is, we still believe what what we want to believe although it might be a complete opposite.this applies even to the most intelligent of us as an example a friend of mine who is a brilliant research scientist she struggles to hang on to darvins teaching.but lets cut the hypocrisy we all have our own agenda, yes the bbc is like the new york times.its got its own perception but haven,t we all?a contradiction i hope the judiciary is still above politics uk sadly in usa they all party hacks.
- Posted by brian leeThe total discussion is bigotted and intentionally motivated.BBC,is a ‘brandname’ like, great news making, independent organization. It puts us ahead of the news.Through its dynamic journalistic approaches, creates several news with clarity, truthfulness and excellence as well.It reflects every contents in dignified manner. It is experienced so many times that, BBC does not entertain anykinds of flattering contents. So,condemning BBC,as anti-God,is indeed ridiculas as well as biased.
- Posted by Pranab HazraBeing with such futile issue, which can elongate the controversies only,we the intelligentia, have been exhibiting our inabilities to poise BBC like powerful media concern.BBC should not be assessed in such narrow angle. Please do judge this \’Idol of journalism\’,with innovative eyes and attitudes. The activities of BBC,always have left the impressions of innovation indeed. Let us meassure BBC,with the yardstick of its adventurous journalistic works that it has performed. Those are unparallel as well as super excellent.Criticism respect to BBC\’s journalism, whether it undergoes through any faulty or manipulating, might be a matter of contention. The present contention is baseless and irrelavant.Splashing muddy water towards BBC,can neither stop its enhancement nor indignify its worldwide fame and credibility.
- Posted by Pranab HazraWhile His followers might be vocal about this supposed anti-God bias of the BBC, we have yet to actually hear God complain.
- Posted by John GalePerhaps these believers should follow His example.
Here we go again, arguing the unproven amongst the unknowing. Religion and the belief in God of any kind is a personal spiritual journey, not something that ANYONE can be absolutely sure of. Chill out and let the believers believe and the rest do whatever it is they do. If there is indeed a God, God will work it out with each person in God’s own way.
- Posted by MarlaThe UK is one of the most secular countries in the world, but there are still parts of the establishment that try to shove religion down our throats, and the BBC is one of them. No publicly funded body has any business telling us what to think or believe. It is an outrage that licence money is used for religious propaganda.
