Muslims angry at German soccer club over song

August 4, 2009

German Muslims have inundated one of the country’s top soccer teams, Schalke 04, with complaints about a verse in the club’s anthem which, they say, is disparaging towards the Prophet Mohammad.

The club has its home in Gelsenkirchen in Germany’s industrial heartland and immigrants make up about a third of the town’s population. Most of them have a Turkish background. Germany’s biggest mosque was opened in nearby Duisburg last year and many Schalke supporters are Muslims, as chat rooms like this one point out.

The lines in question are: “Mohammad was a Prophet who doesn’t understand football” although the words that follow seem positive: “But from all the beautiful colours he came up with blue and white.” Schalke’s colours are blue and white.

Schalke fanThe club, which plays in Germany’s Bundesliga top league and has some of the country’s most ardent fans, is taking the complaints seriously. A spokesman has said Schalke has asked an Islamic expert to analyse the text.

But what is most striking is that the song is not new. Some say it dates back to 1924.  So why has it suddenly started to offend Muslims?

The answer may lie in the mounting resentment in Germany’s Muslim community after politicians were slow to condemn the murder of an Egyptian woman in a court in eastern Germany about a month ago, which we blogged about at the time. The crime was widely viewed as racially motivated.

Germany’s Central Council of Muslims has summed up the situation. “Many Muslims in Germany no longer have a sense of security. Nerves are wearing thin,” General-Secretary Aiman Mazyek was quoted as saying in Bild daily, adding he did not believe the club had malicious intentions.

This storm is another sign of just how tense community relations are in Germany. Maybe a passion for soccer can help overcome some of the divisions.

Islamists are upset? Stop the presses! Since when are they not upset about something and prepared to kill en masse to make their disatisfaction known? They are crazies who can’t get along in the modern world.

Muslims and Schalke fans need to seek a common ground to solve the impasse.

I don’t see anything offensive in the song. It’s a stupid overreaction and a bad place to try to start a dialogue. The song is neither defamatory nor threatening toward Muslims, and it merely discredits the people making a stink over it as being unable to articulate the real problem of cultural assimilation in Germany as immigrants.

Like every other species of moral coward, they avoid taking the issue head on and dilute the issue with frivolous accusations that merely add to misunderstandings and, eventually, antipathy.

Instead of fighting over trivialities, why don’t they try addressing the murder of that woman as the real issue? Leave the sport and the sports club out of it; attacking something that has nothing to do with the problem merely makes new enemies.

This is censorship plain and simple. The team needs to tell these whiners to shut up and have their fans keep singing this song.

It isn’t even offensive! Oh, my God (blashpemy!), they said that Mohammad doesn’t understand soccer! What’s next, claiming that Jesus Christ was inept at algebra? If these soccer folks allow these bullies to win, it’s going to make them bolder in other demands, too. It’s time to put your foot down and tell them that one of the beauties of free society is freedom of speech. And it isn’t just the “islamists” who need to can it about their imaginary god, but all religions.

If the team stupidly tells these fans to stop singing about Mohammad’s ignorance of soccer, the real fans should stand up and shout some real offense against these hard-headed ignorant immigrants who think that the country they move to should conform to their stupid, backward ways. I’m talking the whole pig/Mohammad was a pedophile angle.

Muslims should also remember that i find it distressing when i see them parading through the streets of london calling on all other Muslims to bomb and kill us westerners, and they have the audacity to complain over a stupid football song, when you treat all other people and faiths with respect you may get the same in return, if you don’t like it you can always use the other western free option and go back to your own country and sing better acceptable football songs. Jesus!! it gets on my nerves, and yes as a christian i can say the word Jesus and nobody will get upsaet of threaten to blow up my family, why? because we are normal people….

Muslims are always upset with non muslims. The same is true for Christians also… They always want to upset non christians. The tendency to do so lies in belief of the two religions which is exclusivity of God.

To Ahmed:

Muslims hate peace. Muslims cannot live without violence. Did you read your history? And yes, no one is jealous of macabre, illogical, irrational, insane ramblers. Without any hatred, it is not even worthwhile of hate… So no question of jealousy. Dependency of world on oils is reducing… So in short future, no need also for useless.

The Iranian Ambassador to the UN had just finished giving a speech, and walked out into the lobby where he met President Obama. They shook hands, and as they walked the Iranian said, “You know, I have just one question about what I have seen in America.”
President Obama said, “Well, anything I can do to help you, I will.”
The Iranian whispered “My son watches this show Star Trek and in it there is Chekhov who is Russian, Scotty who is Scottish, Uhura who is Black, Sulu who is Japanese, but no Arabs. My son is very upset and doesn’t understand why there aren’t any Iranians, Syrians or Iraqis on Star Trek.”
President Obama smiled, leaned toward the Iranian Ambassador, and whispered back, “Because it takes place in the future.”
