The Spice Girls may be performing to sell-out crowds during world-wide reunion tour, but their diminutive plastic toy versions don’t appear to meeting the same enthusiastic response.
“Attention Mr. Beckham, Get Two Spice Girls For Only 99 cents” read an ad this week in the Los Angeles Times for 99 Cents Only Stores – a discount chain with over 250 stores in California, Texas, Arizona and Nevada.
The bargain figurines sport skimpy, midriff-baring outfits in true Spice Girls style.
Given that a ticket to see the real-life Spice Girls can set you back over a $100, their plastic equivalents seem an astounding value. Buy all five, turn on your stereo, and you’ve got your own Spice Girls concert, at a discount!
“It comes with a little plastic stand so you put them on your bookshelf,” said a 99 Cents Only Stores employee, who asked not to be identified. The employee said the packaging of this “official” Spice Girl merchandise also includes biographical information on the women, as well as their astrological signs.
The group shot to fame in the 1990s with their sexy image and “girl power”
slogan. Their current tour is the first as a group since disbanding in 2000.
The most visible member is Victoria Beckham, also known as “Posh Spice”, who is married to footballer David Beckham.
The other members of the group are Geri “Ginger Spice” Halliwell, Melanie “Scary Spice” Brown, Emma “Baby Spice” Bunton and Melanie “Sporty Spice” Chisholm.
