The Brits are coming! Well, most of them, anyway

lewis.jpgEvery year the British press talks up the chances of British actors, actress, directors, screenwriters etc winning Oscar nominations and then Academy Awards. Often their optimism proves unfounded.

On Tuesday there was more of the same. Daniel Day-Lewis (actor), Tom Wilkinson (supporting actor), Julie Christie (actress), Tilda Swinton (supporting actress), plus Irish teenager Saoirse Ronan (supporting actress), all made it on to the shortlist, and “Atonement”, based on Ian McEwan’s novel, garnered seven nominations in total, including best picture.

So, a good day for the Brits? Yes and no. Online newspaper reports on today’s announcement are leading on two stars who are NOT in the running for a golden statuette — Keira Knightley and James McAvoy, both considered shoo-ins for best actress and actor nominations respectively in “Atonement”. “Was Keira Robbed?”, the Sun tabloid asks in its “Have Your Say” section.

May the best performance win!

Who cares about nationality? Nationality should never be the issue - only th acting.

Trouble is, rare is an award given to the most deserving.

The Oscars are usually a travesty.

Simple truth!
