For film stars, sometimes less said is better.

lewis.jpgDaniel Day-Lewis flew into a bit of a rage during a press conference at the Berlin Film Festival, slamming the media for the “circus” (a description he qualified with a derivation of the “f-word”) it had created around Heath Ledger, the Australian actor who died last month.

But arguably, by letting rip before the world’s press, he was fanning the very flame he sought to douse.

Penelope Cruz is another case in point. Asked whether she felt a victim of her beauty, in the sense that she may feel she has to work harder to prove herself as an actress, the Spaniard was careful to avoid using the word “beautiful” to complete the sentence “I never consider myself too …”

Probably quite rightly, she could just picture the next day’s headlines: “Cruz says she’s no beauty”, or how about the tabloid version — “I’m ugly - Cruz!”

When you are a star you really are a hostage to what you say and do.
