UPDATE!- “American Idol”: What was UP with Paula?

paula.jpgIn seven seasons of “American Idol,” Paula Abdul has definitely had her moments.

But her gaffe on Tuesday night’s episode was either the “Kookiest Paula Moment Ever” or a sign of the judges’ apparently not-so-spontaneous evaluations of contestants’ performances.

Abdul on Wednesday sought to explain the blunder as a simple misunderstanding. “We all just screwed up everything,” she told Entertainment Tonight.

It was Neil Diamond night, and after each of the show’s five remaining contestants sang their first of two songs for the evening, the judges were asked to comment on their performances.

Randy Jackson quickly rattled off his impressions, and then Abdul launched into a lengthy analysis of contestant Jason Castro’s two performances. Yes, that’s right. Abdul remembered TWO performances. When Castro, and all of the other contestants, had only performed ONCE.

“Oh my God, I thought you sang twice,” a flustered Abdul said when Jackson gently pointed out that Castro had only performed one song so far. She added: “This is hard!”

“You’re seein’ the future baby, you’re seein’ the future!” host Ryan Seacrest said.

Abdul tried to cover for the mistake by saying she had been reading her notes from both Castro’s performance and contestant David Cook’s performances.

The flub was enough to convince some fans that Abdul must have prepared her notes on both songs before the live performance.

On the “Idol” forums, some fans pondered whether the judges’ comments were a function of who the show’s producers want to win rather than the content of the performances. Others gave the show the benefit of the doubt, saying Abdul must have taken notes at the dress rehearsals

Abdul explained on Wednesday that Idol producers had thrown the judges a last minute curveball during the show.  “I am feverishly trying to write notes for every performance,” she recounted, saying her notes got mixed up.

“I was just trying to give my critique for Jason Castro, and scribbled Jason’s name, and that was David (Cook)’s. “This is live television. This is fun!,” she said.

I think there is either a major snaffoo in American Idol land or Paula needs to stop overdosing on her meds. I’ve been thinking back on Paula’s comment for Jason’s performance. For the second performance (which didn’t happen yet), she didn’t like at all, and when she tried to cover herself, she said that she was reading notes from David Cook’s critique, yet when she critiqued David Cook’s songs, she thought his first performance was great. At the end of the show she proclaimed David Cook the winner of American Idol.

This makes me question whether someone else is writing her comments or is there a deliberate effort among the judges to have some kind of influence over the viewers votes? Who is to say that the votes that are cast by the viewers every week, are really the results that are presented? In a sick way, I hope that she’s just loopy, rather than be part of some conspiracy. What is going on here? Things that make you go hmmmm…

Paula needs to leave and go to rehab, and possibly to speech therapy. Every time she opens her mouth I am afraid. She obviously has some issues - and whether or not it is serious prescription pain killer addiction, or early Alzheimer’s I don’t know. Please, find a new judge.

Castro did great last night!..AI just proved last night that they want him out of the show..coz he’s def. a threat to the Davids finale…Jason is very unique & talented!…

Hated the judges last night!..Randy never liked Jason!.. and Paula??…just hated what she did last night!..that was so wrong!…and Simon is so wrong about saying it was forgetable…it wasnt…and ill remember it!…

I’ve had enough.

I’ve been more than annoyed by the robotic behavior of the plastic robot shills in the “Mosh Pit” (Please stop waving your hands back and forth because a producer told you to; please stop squealing and applauding whenever a singer holds a note more than fifty milliseconds - again because a producer told you to.) Note to all: real audiences pay attention to the performer.

Now, Miss Abdul has, for whatever reason, brought the scrutiny of the few remaining jaundiced eyes (like mine) to bear on one of the few “reality” shows that had a glimmer of reality left.

the proof is in the pudding…..the show is rigged!

This was not a simple mistake. Paula had pre-planned notes. She gave Jason Castro bad notes on his second song before he sang it - and no, I think the idea that she was critiquing David Cook is a very obvious bunch of garbage. Since what she said is that he lacked charm, a quality very much determined by the actual performance at the actual moment, her comment was not acceptable even as rehearsal notes.

Paula was reading from a script. They had already decided to give Jason Castro a poor review before he sang. And the most horrible part of it all is that after he was slammed for a song he had not sung, Jason had to sing - knowing that he was going to get slammed.

I’m not surprised he sang with so little fire and enthusiasm. This is the worst thing they’ve ever done to any contestant.

I knew some would love making fun of her as usual. She makes mistakes, don’t we all at times?

I agree, mistakes happen.

I think it’s time for a new judge. Paula needs to go.

She just made a mistake.

I don’t really care if it is scripted. The judges don’t vote. The people do. I’m sure she always writes down whatever fluffy piece of advice or criticism she has. Maybe she was confused. Maybe she saw it at a dress rehearsal. I don’t think that the producers are out to get Jason (not that he’s going to be able to win, in my opinion).

Brook is next to go anyway. Then Syesha, then Jason. After that, the final two is probably going to be David vs. David. (hopefully Cook takes it!)

Just my opinion.

Everyone gets confused occasionally. Imagine everything those folks are tracking through the week to prepare for each show.

The fact that Paula critiqued Jason on his 2nd performance, before he even performed it is absurd. It proves that she does not even pay attention on the show, and had already planned on saying what she did despite his actual performance.
It’s so painfully obvious that all the judges are pushing for a David vs David Finale, no wonder the ratings are low because it’s becoming predictable.

Anyone watching over the last two to three weeks, would have to be blind and deaf not to realise they were throwing Jason under the bus. The editing of Andrew Lloyd Webber clips, with him deriding his choice of song, before one note had been sung, you were expecting the worst. They have always portrayed him as dumb, even though I have seen interviews, when he really speaks well. They have edited them out and shown the worst parts of his clips. There is no way Paula can even begin to say it was David’s song she was speaking about, because for David Cook, she complimented him and yet for Jasons “apparent” second song, she said, he had lost his charm “word used by everyone to describe Jason”. It is obvious she was reading a script given to her by Nigel, but not meant to be read together. Jason has been very popular and they had to try and get rid of him to ensure their finale David A versus David C

Idol seems to be going down “fast.” Abdul sure isn’t helping with the program either!

I think Paula needs a change or we need a change from her. Somone should check what is in her coke cup. A lot of her comments don’t make and sense at all and once she called Syesha (BROOKE) I don’t know if anyone else caught that or not.

The show obviously isn’t live . . . it wasn’t that Paula ‘remembered’ seeing a performance that hadn’t happened, it was that they had restructured the show and showed taped parts out of sequence. You could tell the way everyone tried to cover it up, that although Paula’s out of it, she had seen two performances already.

Something stinks in Idol land!!! It has been obvious for the last several weeks that the producers of this show want Jason Castro out. Last night was simply more blatant evidence of that. TO REVIEW HIS SONG NEGATIVELY *BEFORE* HE EVEN PERFORMED…Doesn’t get much more obvious than that! There is speculation that she was basing it on his rehearsal performance but even if that is the case…shouldn’t the critiques be based on the ACTUAL SHOW PERFORMANCE?! After the stinging critique, Jason was forced to sit on stage for 3 minutes during a commerical break and then perform….I think he showed great courage and fortitude even getting through it. Then of course, all 3 judges got the opportunity to bash him yet again. Fully expect Jason to be eliminated tonight NOT because it’s necessarily what “America” wants but because it is totally what the producers of American Idol want.

I am not a Paula Abdul fan as I think she is just someone who tells everyone they sounded good, or they look good, or their dress is nice, she never really says that song was just awful. However, she most times doesn’t seem to know what she is talking about, and last night is an example.
