”American Idol” runner-up David Archuleta, 17, might be the latest tween hearthrob. But sorry girls, he’s nowhere near ready to date.
“I just don’t want to deal with that (girlfriend) drama right now,” a giggly, embarrassed Archuleta told reporters on Friday.
“I just want to be able focus on music. When I feel like I’ve met a girl who has a great personality, and who is someone I can connect with, and who has good standards for themselves and who has respect for themselves, and who cares for others as well…It’s just something I will definitely want to focus on later in life when I’m ready. But I just feel like I’m so young,” he said.
Archuleta reassured his millions of disappointed young fans that he was okay about losing the title to rocker David Cook. “I want them to know I am feeling great. David Cook deserves to be the American Idol and he is such a great guy too. My priority was not to win the competition but to do my best.”
“We both gave it our all (on Tuesday) and we both feel really great about it. I don’t think I could have done anything better,” the former “chosen one” said.
The shy teen also tried to put to rest stories regarding his father. Archuleta said he had been shielded from the media during the show and found the stories about being bullied or made to cry by his father “weird.”
“I heard one thing that he refused to give me water. That is the weirdest thing. I am 17. If I want water, I am pretty sure I will just go get it.”
“He (my father) is a great guy. There isn’t anything that he has done that is bad… my whole family has been a great support. They are the ones that have kept me grounded,” Archuleta said.

David Archuleta is just in the right age to have girlfriend but what’s important for him right now is his career so, the girls should understand him and they should not also discriminate him. His songs are nice and wonderful i love listening to it. It’s amazing. So, the girls will just have to wait.

Well , THAT’S ME!!!!!!
lol.
Why is it everytime someone is shy or does not want a girlfriend right now that person is gay? Being a Mormon Like David is, we as youth were taught that to not rush into things and to have fun in groups and to just say no to things that could lead to trouble etc. it is safer. That young men and Women respect themselves first then others. That Sexuality is sacred and meant for Marriage between a man and a women and to have children in the bounds of Marriage. Of course I have to remember that gay and being a lesbo is the style that is prefered in life now. What a farce. It is sad that before you meet anyone the first thing that comes to mind is ” Is he or she gay?” What a shock to find out that they are not. Stop calling David GAY. He is not and he probably doesn’t know what that really means anyway. He is so innocent. He is here to show all of us that there is a better way to happiness and that is thru his music.
- Posted by barbaraI am a nonmormon that lives in Utah. I don’t believe that the people posting comments believe that being gay is negative as much as they believe that putting any type of sexual label on a teenager without knowing the person and their real life is unfair and prejudicial. What does it matter? He is a talented young man that is still figuring out who he is as a person. I believe that his feelings about dating is not because of his religous views as much as it is about being practical. As a mother of two teenage children I see the drama that dating creates during high school. My son didn’t date until his senior year and even then it was the girl who was the one who made all the advances. Once he got to college he came out of his shell and started to get serious about girls. My daughter has dated the same boy for a 1 1/2 but is not in love with him nor interested in marrying him. They have done nothing more than kiss and that is the way she prefers it because her priority is to graduate high school and college and travel. She has mentioned more than once how her friends get engaged, have sexual relationships and then get dumped. David A.’s goal is to have a long, sucessful music career. The fact that he realizes having a relationship is not beneficial nor practical at this time proves nothing more than he is a litle more mature than others his age.
- Posted by PCSo what if he is gay or not. There is no proofs, and it is none of your business. What you need to see is the quality of the person, and he has that good quality which others may not have. So, stop judging and speculating.
- Posted by ciciPeople should respect him for not wanting a girl friend.
- Posted by ciciHe is a good example for other teenagers. I agree with him, having a girl friend will distract him. At such a young age, he knows what he wants in life and he has a back up plan if it doesn’t fall through.
He is very mature, caring, humble, has such good voice, and yet he manages to have good grades in high school. It is a rare combination that you can find in other teenagers.
I think it’s fine if he’s not ready for a girlfriend. It’s better not to rush into things. And I understand how he feels music is more important right now. But he seems like a great guy and he has a great voice too.

- Posted by JessicaI like to hear that he wants to focus on music. We love to listen his singing and do not want to hear some news about his girlfriend. He is so right and has a smart judgement. Why do stupid people say he is gay? Maybe they want him to be a gay. But it never will be happen! He is a smart teen boy and a great singer!
- Posted by HyeThere are so many comments on this thread that equate gay with something completely negative. No doubt that most of them are from LDS members who have been brainwashed into thinking that homosexuality is a sin.
Just my humble opinion after being on the planet for nearly fifty years - that kid is going to fly out of the closet the moment he can escape the clutches of his father and the Mormon church and when he does, his artistry and career will be all the better for it. Any teen boy choosing to sing, “And I Am Telling You” from Dreamgirls, definitely has the gay gene. They played that clip on one episode of Idol and everyone in the room went, “OH OH”.
