People magazine’s top pick this year for its “Sexiest Man Alive” is Australian star Hugh Jackman, who won over the magazine’s top editors with his down-to-earth personality as much as his bulging biceps.
The magazine’s executive editor, Jess Cagle, told the “Today” show on NBC that Jackman was a “surprising choice.”
“What’s unique about Hugh Jackman is that he is this nice man, devoted to his
wife, not affected by Hollywood — a nice Aussie bloke, as Nicole Kidman put it,” Elizabeth Sporkin, People’s executive editor told Reuters.
James Bond star Daniel Craig, second on the list, said his favorite Bond girl was the “girl on my arm,” his longtime girlfriend Satsuki Mitchell. And Jon Hamm, the 37-year-old ‘Mad Men’ star, who was No. 3, said he tries to be “a good person.”
“I’m loyal and I’m trustworthy — I’m kind,” Hamm told People.
Others who made the list also followed the decent-guy path laid down by the top three sexy men. Soccer sensation David Beckham and Olympian Michael Phelps freely admitted to being mama’s boys, and television star Blair Underwood said he didn’t undertsand why women found him irresistible.
“It’s like the face of what is attractive has changed,” said Robert Pattinson, another hunky man on the list who is also the star of vampire-thriller “Twilight.”
Pattinson may be on to something — certainly People’s editors think he is. But we sort of miss Colin Farrell, Jude Law and Russell Crowe. Only a few years ago, they were considered pretty hot, then came a sex tape (Farrell), a nasty breakup (Law) and a telephone throwing incident (Crowe). Ahh, the good old days.
That said, we wonder if, in fact, nice is the new sexy. So anyone out there who wants to weigh-in, let us know.

Actually Pattinson is a bit of both. He has that naughty air about him and is a sweet and funny guy. Like dark and milk chocolate merged together. He reminds me of Depp.

Nice is the new sexy. - Reuters BlogsColin, Jude, and Russell are decent guys…jeez, you act like Hugh, Craig, and whats-his-name should be wearing halos over their heads! Somehow, I doubt that. Let’s see, didn’t Daniel sleep with Jude Law’s girlfriend during their “nasty breakup?” Yeah…and what’s-your-name, Mr. Boy Scout, if you resort to telling people you’re loyal, trustworthy, and kind, you just make yourself sound like a golden retriever…and a bit full of yourself. After all, no one knows what tomorrow holds…your “nasty breakup” or sex tape could be just around the bend…
- Posted by sherylUmmm… Russell Crowe is also devoted to his wife and unaffected by Hollywood–a doting father and a good person. That incident from several years ago does not define his whole life. I’ll take him over Jackman, Craig, and the others you mentioned at any time. I’m with “sheryl”. You act like these guys should be wearing halos. Everyone’s had their “bad boy” moments.
- Posted by LayneI think that “bad boy” image is so 80’s. This proves that decent, quiet guys do finish first.
- Posted by CynthiaRussell Crowe is a devoted family man, and hasn’t had any kerfuffles or incidents since the infamous telephone incident several years ago… which was hugely exaggerated in importance by the media. He’s a charitable, kind and in the words of people who know him … a sweetly funny man. Maybe he wasn’t like that some years ago, but the past is the past. Move on.
Jude Law is by all reports a nice man who avoids publicity and keeps his nose clean.
Colin has been sober for a couple years and not in trouble at all.
It’s time to let go of the old gossip and leave these men alone, without trying to use your outdated stupid labels.
- Posted by Mimiummm did you forget Russell Crowe destroying a front desk persons head with a phone? Homeboy has got anger issues for real.
