Russell crowned America’s Favorite Dancer
As we predicted yesterday, the top 3 dancers were Russell, Kathryn McCormick and Jakob Carr. And while Kathryn, like Russell, was praised for her growth as a dancer, it was not enough for the top 2. In the end it was Russell and Jakob who stood before the judges for their final assessment.
Judge Nigel Lythgoe proclaimed the country and the show as the big winners of the night for having the good sense to choose Jakob, a “polished diamond”, and Russell, an “unpolished diamond”, as its top two dancers.
After a recap tape featuring moments like Adam Shankman telling Jakob, “God put you on this planet to dance,” and a teary-eyed Mary Murphy telling Russell, “you are such an inspiration to so many dancers out there,” Russell was announced the winner.
The krumper proceeded to rip off his shirt (being topless obviously worked for Russell, but not for Ryan Di Lello), and call fellow top 20 dancer Kevin Hunte up on stage.
“You’ve been with me all this season,” he said to the hip-hop dancer, before turning to the audience and thanking his parents and girlfriend for their support.
It was a happy ending for an odd season of the popular dance show. While the talent of season six was some of the best yet, the show lacked the momentum of other seasons, perhaps due to it following so quickly after season five and the format changes.
On that note, auditions for season seven start January 18 in Miami, with the show returning to Fox in its usual summer time slot. If you just can’t wait, there is always the new SYTYCD fitness DVD — featuring past favorites like Stephen “Twitch” Boss and Travis Wall.
