Sinatra posts you a letter, 10 years after his death

Posted by: Belinda Goldsmith

sinatra.jpgTo mark the 10th anniversary of the death of Frank Sinatra on May 14, 1998, the U.S. Postal Service is  releasing 120 million 42 cent first-class stamps carrying portraits of the late entertainer.  “One hundred twenty million portraits of ‘Ol’ Blue Eyes’ will carry our cards, letters and packages to their destinations all around the world,” said Postal Service Board of Governors Chairman Alan Kessler.

His family was delighted with their father, who died at the age of 82, getting the official stamp of approval.

“Our father loved this country,” said the Sinatra family, represented by Nancy, Frank Jr. and Tina Sinatra, in a statement. “This would have been one of his happiest days.”

Art director Richard Sheaff of Scottsdale, Arizona, worked with stamp artist Kazuhiko Sano of Mill Valley, California, to create the image based on a 1950s photograph of the entertainer, one of whose songs was “I’m gonna sit right down and write myself a Letter.”

In hot water, Miley Cyrus turns to … charity

Posted by: Belinda Goldsmith

miley-2.jpgIt’s an age-old solution for when a celebrity finds themselves in trouble with their fans — do charity work. For a while it seemed that nothing could stop the meteoric rise of fresh-faced Miley Cyrus, better known as “Hannah Montana.”  Then, she made the mistake of posing topless, wrapped in a satin sheet, in a photo shoot for Vanity Fair magazine by celebrity photographer Annie Leibovitz. Cyrus, 15, has apologized to all her fans for an error in judgment and for letting them down, and she’s now out there with her mother to help a charity for women battling breast cancer.

miley-bag.jpgThe Libby Ross Foundation said Miley and Trish Cyrus were among a list of celebrity mothers and daughters helping raise funds for the charity by decorating yoga bags with Swarovski jewels that will be listed on eBay for sale from May 5-15. Other celebrities duos include Susan Sarandon and daughter Eva Amurri and Hayden Panettiere and her mother Lesley Panattiere.

Dare tell Kanye West his performance stinks?

Posted by: Belinda Goldsmith

kanye.jpgHas anyone told rapper Kanye West that a reviewer does not have to be nice to him? The rapper exploded on his blog this weekend after Entertainment Weekly reviewer Chris Willman gave the opening night of his “Glow in the Dark” tour in Seattle a mark of B+.

“Grab a drink, holla at some nice girls, and party bitch!!! You don’t know shit about passion and art. You’ll never gain credibility at this rate,” wrote West.

“I’m not a pop star. I don’t care about anything but making great art. Never come 2 one of my shows ever again, you’re not invited and if you see me… BOW!!! This is not pop, it’s pop art! Chris Willman, kill yourself!”

The last bit of advice for Willman was later removed from the blog.

Angelina and Brad — not married again!

Posted by: Belinda Goldsmith

brangelina.jpgBet Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie’s publicists wish they got a  pay rise every time the rumor of the star couple’s marriage did the rounds. Hollywood’s hottest couple married again this weekend — not. But this time their publicist deferred the knockdown of rumors of a wedding in a New Orleans wedding chapel to the chapel’s clergyman.

“Brad and Angelina did not get married by us,” the Rev. Tony Talavera, owner of the French Quarter Wedding chapel, told magazine Life & Style Weekly a day after the rumored Saturday wedding.

Talavera said he normally did not  reveal who he did or did not marry at his wedding center just 14 blocks from the Jolie-Pitt home but he went public this time after Pitt’s people called him and asked him to “quash any misinformation that’s out there.”

“I have not met them personally,” said Talavera. ”This just got out of control. Their publicist asked me to give out a statement.”

But Talavera said he’d be happy to do the job for Pitt and Jolie if they ever do finally decide to rid themselves of the rumors and take the plunge.

“We extend the invitation. We’re glad they are neighbors,” he said.

Is Idol’s King of Mean, Simon Cowell, kind at heart?

Posted by: Belinda Goldsmith

cowell.jpgSimon Cowell plays the King of Mean on the panel of judges on “American Idol,” telling some wannabee stars they must be deaf if they think they can sing, calling others’ dancing hideous, and telling one female contestant she looked like the Incredible Hulk’s wife. But a story emerged this week that shone a new light on 48-year-old Cowell — he gave a couple whose three-year-old daughter is suffering cancer a check of $162,000 to pay off their mortgage.

The bombastic Brit, who was recently estimated by Forbes magazine to earn about $43 million  year, was so touched by the story of Madelaine Stoen when she appeared on Oprah Winfrey’s U.S. TV chat show that he declared he would be her “guardian angel.” Madelaine’s parents Amy and Randy Stoen from Claremont, Minnesota, were struggling financially after the youngster was diagnosed with an aggressive form of cancer and would take turns traveling more than 100 miles from  home each day so she could get treatment.

After presenting the couple with a check, Cowell was quoted on the Oprah Winfrey Web site saying that he’s only just learned about the joy of giving. “I didn’t realize that. It’s taken me 48 years. It’s going to catch on, this, because it is a very, very good feeling,” he said.

Wonder if he’ll be as generous to the remaining finalists in ”American Idol.”

Elton sings for Hillary — “I’m still standing”

Posted by: Belinda Goldsmith

elton.jpgAmerican TV superstar Oprah Winfrey might be backing Democratic presidential hopeful Barak Obama, but his rival Hillary Clinton got her own celebrity boost on Monday when Elton John announced he would perform a solo concert on behalf of her campaign on April 9 at Radio City Music Hall in New York.  The event, called “Elton and Hillary: One Night Only,” is the British star’s first public solo concert in New York City withouhillary.jpgt his band in eight years. Ticket prices start at $125.

“I’m not a politician but I believe in the work that Hillary Clinton does,” said John.  “I’m excited to support Hillary by performing at what will be a truly memorable night.”

It’s a tight race between Obama, who would be the United States’ first black president if successful, and Clinton, who also would break new ground by being the first female president.
