Girls rule Golden Globes

keira.jpgFinally some movie love for a chick flick.

All week various critics’ groups have been checking in with their top film awards. Two movies have dominated: “No Country for Old Men,” a gruesome crime crime thriller set in Texas and starring Tommy Lee Jones and Javier Bardem, and ”There Will Be Blood,” an epic saga about a crazed oilman starring Daniel Day-Lewis. Not many women’s roles in these macho-driven, violent epics.

But Thursday morning the Hollywood Foreign Press Association  announced its Golden Globe nominations for this year’s best and a chick flick, “Atonement,” took the most nominations.

“Atonement,” a romance set against the backdrop of World War II, took a leading seven nominations including Best Drama Picture. This gives the film a boost in its quest to be among the top five films nominated for Best Picture at the Academy Awards. And the boost couldn’t come at a better time, as “Atonement” faces not only “No Country” and “Blood” but also such male-driven flicks as “Michael Clayton,” “American Gangster” and “Into the Wild” in grabbing one of the top slots for the highest film accolade of all.

Enchanting New Star, Amy Adams

Posted by: Mark Porter

adams1.jpgA star was born over the U.S. Thanksgiving holiday weekend.

Before last weekend, Amy Adams was a little-known character actress. Granted, she had been nominated for an Academy Award two years ago for Best Supporting Actress for her portrayal of a naive Southern gal in “Junebug” but the film was hardly seen and Adams ended up losing the Oscar to Rachel Weisz.

But then “Enchanted,” in which 33-year-old Adams stars as a cartoon Disney princess who comes to life, hit theaters . The film was a surprise smash, making $50 million over five days — and the cash continues to roll in the movie remaining at the top of the North American box office chart.

Adams lead performance in the film is being hailed by critics and audiences alike. Variety compared her performance to the one given by Julie Andrews in ”Mary Poppins” for which Andrews was named Best Actress at the Academy Awards.

Producers No Grinches After All

Posted by: Mark Porter

grinch2.jpgThe Jujamcyn Theaters company has decided not to be a Grinch this holiday season after all.

The company has dropped its appeal of a judge’s ruling that allowed the Broadway production of “The Grinch That Stole Christmas” to start performances at the St. James Theater despite a stagehands strike that has hit the Great White Way for almost three weeks.

According to Playbill.com, “Grinch producers argued that the production should be able to reopen because they had negotiated their own contract with Local One prior to the strike. The separate contract was required because the musical offers 12-to-15 performances a week, different from the eight-performance schedule most other shows employ.”

Talks are scheduled to resume on Wednesday to see whether the rest of Broadway will rejoin the “Grinch” back on stage soon.
