When you get the call from the sales guys, you go. Compared to a deal that might mean millions in revenue, 5K for biz-class airfare is peanuts. (My opportunity cost at the time was pretty low…) Plus as a middling guy in the hierarchy, it doesn’t hurt to show top management your willingness to do that kind of thing.

In fact, this is not exactly uncommon. The first time I heard this phenomenon, it was from a lady who sat next to me on a flight back to LAX from PVG. It became less of a joke the first time I did it.

Now, mayhaps because I am lower on the payscale than TED and Gorman, it made a bit more sense but having done something similar a few times and having actually met people who have also made similar trips, they seem less farcical and the dubiousness of the ROI can be argued.
