FifthDecade, will happily bet that the senior management of Apple are paying less as a percentage in tax than the proverbial cleaning lady at Apple.

Income from option exercise is only a long-term gain if you buy the stock and hold it for a year or more. If you sell it right away you are taxed on the difference b/t the exercise price and the strike price as if it were ordinary income.

FifthDecade, how are options grants taxed? As income or as long-term capital gains?

That is really the question...

I don't care how much they earn, but I bet they pay more than 15% tax!

Raises an interesting point of why Apple remains a public company right? Shareholders in Apple have been rewarded with share price appreciation, but it has been employees who have been the real winners. And this would not have been possible if Apple had been a private firm.

LucasW, guanix, MS did get preferred shares for that investment, but they exchanged them for 18 million shares of common, which they have sold off.

I don't understand why what Apple pays its employees is big news. They're competitive, so what's the problem? Do they have to pay more? People seem happy there, and they design great products. If they were unhappy, most would be able to get jobs elsewhere.

But then it might be hard to sell a book if you say things like that.

Microsoft’s 1997 Apple investment was structured as 150,000 shares of Apple Series-A, nonvoting, convertible (after Aug 2000 at $8.25/common share) preferred stock worth $150 million.

By end of 2001, Microsoft had converted all preferred into 18.2 million common shares…and then exited its investment entirely by end of 2003.

[Note, these shares would equate to 36.4 million common shares on a post-split (Feb 2005) basis.]

Apple history nitpick: My sources say Apple 55.3 million shares outstanding at their IPO.

@LucasW: Wasn't that preferred stock?

Surely Microsoft got some shares issued when they invested $150M in 1997? http://news.cnet.com/2100-1001-202143.html

That's probably at most a few tens of millions of shares, but not nothing...
