Although banks, insurance companies and other similar institutions are usually the sureties on other types of contracts (for example, to bond a contractor who is under a contractual obligation to pay for the completion of a construction project) such entities are reluctant to put their depositors’ or policyholders’ funds at the kind of risk involved in posting a bail bond. Bail bond agents, on the other hand, are usually in the business to cater to criminal defendants, often securing their customers’ release in just a few hours. Bail bond agents are almost exclusively found in the United States and its former commonwealth, The Philippines. In most other countries bail is usually much less and the practice of bounty hunting is illegal.

SAC Capital, the hedge fund which Stevie Cohen owns, and has about $5 billion in, just agreed to pay a $1.8 billion penalty to the SEC. The fund is also forbidden from investing outside money, so Stevie is definitely hurting for some cash right now. This appears to be the reason he is ‘flipping’ is art. I’m not saying the bubble theory is wrong, but Stevie’s actions might not be evidence for it.

If the high-end art market collapses, that would be a good thing, because then public museums could afford to keep or even expand their collections.

I know you have friends in the art world, but why should the rest of us care if some rich people rip off other rich people over trinkets that for the most part no one else wants? (except maybe that Francis Bacon portrait of Freud) :}

However, as a rank amateur, I hae no idea where one accesses the raw data. I would value any advice. Thank you very kindly. JPM
