A number of countries do give them a place, but a place apart. That’s the deal, and it’s not likely to change.

But where is the Davos-man outrage about Labor Rights? Didn’t they shoot garment workers in Cambodia and Bangladesh in recent weeks? If the right of organization a basic human right? What does Okonjo-Iweala say about that when you question her about labor rights?

What about the rights of indigenous people? Where is the outrage there? Do they have panels in Davos about that? Do the Nigerians respect the rights of their minority groups?

What about how the Occupy movement was crushed so effectively in the US? Don’t we have the right of free assembly? Where is the Davos outrage when people that protest capitalism have their rights taken away?

C’mon Felix, how about having equal opportunity for outrage?

The old Viscount Rothermere, long deceased, told me when I first became involved with the Forum, that the organization’s motto was “Committed to not offending anybody.” As is obvious on this issue and many others, that’s an untenable position.

Humans don’t lose their rights just because they’re in the minority, and it’s the job of any democratic leader to refuse to support the forces of intolerance and hate within his country

This seems like an odd way to put it; I’d say that her answer, in fact, highlights the difference between absolutist democracy and liberal democracy (which is probably a continuum, with Nigeria demonstrated to be on the far end). The “job of a democratic leader” is rather subjective, but probably includes recognition of the constraints imposed by the electorate, and some awareness of how best to allocate “political capital”. This is sufficiently repulsive that it would be worth a fair amount of political capital just to move popular opinion (which might weaken the electoral constraints in the future), but I don’t agree that her saying something, even when she’s only indirectly responsible to the electorate, would clearly do more good than harm (that harm in this case mostly being impairment of her ability to do other things).
