Corning profit beats Street, outlook hits shares
NEW YORK, July 28 (Reuters) – Strong demand for TVs,
handheld devices and computer monitors drove specialty glass
maker Corning Inc (GLW.N: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz) to stronger-than-expected quarterly
results on Wednesday, but concerns about a slump in demand
weighed on its shares.
The buying boom for LCD TVs in North America, marked by
consumers hauling giant TV boxes in droves, has cooled, the
company said in its report for the second quarter. But profit
at the largest maker of glass for liquid crystal display
screens rose by 49 percent as markets in China and elsewhere in
Asia picked up the slack.
Kodak posts bigger-than-expected loss
NEW YORK (Reuters) – Decaying demand from traditional film businesses proved a second-quarter speed bump for Eastman Kodak Co’s (EK.N: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz) prolonged plan for profitability through digital businesses.
Shares of Kodak fell 14 percent on Wednesday after the company posted a loss that was much bigger than expected, hurt in part by weak demand for film used to make Hollywood movies and video advertisements, while its photo processing business suffered from the loss of a key customer.
