*  Abbott Laboratories, fresh off a series of announced deals, reports third-quarter results.

*  A congressional committee meets to work on two key bills in the Obama administration’s broad plan to tighten bank and capital market regulation.

On the anniversary of Lehman Brothers’ failure, investors will also be eyeing quarterly results from Best Buy and Adobe Systems.
