Audio slideshow: H1N1 vaccine rolls out
Reuters visited the Boston Children’s Hospital Primary Care Center, where H1N1 vaccines are being offered to patients who are at least two years old and healthy.
Everbody needs to back off with the “journalists are horrible” comments and look at the graphs again. The estimated rates are NOT actual rates. These are based upon the latest data and then projected, like any other probability. Also, I totally agree with Judy H. Remember, not every country in the world has a viable, working health surveillance system. It is guaranteed that there are more cases out there that we don’t know about. Always. I wouldn’t be surprised if there was a HIGHER mortality rate in certain populations.
Also, p emery is absolutely correct. We haven’t seen the full impact of this current outbreak yet.
Use IV (Banana Bag) if you do not have anti-viral drugs. Nobody is talking about the matter of morbidity from Country to Country and that is concerning.
There is a lot more misinformation in this COMMENT section than the article.–”The most important thing that people need to know is that hand sanitizers are largely INEFFECTIVE at preventing the flu”Not true, most of the Purel type alcohol based hand cleaners are extremely effective at killing the virus. Possibly more so since most people do not properly wash their hands.– “N95 masks.. Unless TAPED to the FACE they are utterly useless”Not true, properly fitted N95 masks have a success rate in hospital use approaching 99%. They do not need to be taped to the face. But they are difficult to breath through and uncomfortable to wear.– Masks are intended to keep the wearer from transmitting germs via spit, not to keep from getting them. Only airtight masks such as gas masks that form an airtight seal around the face and that have a screw in filter offer real protction from germs. Not exactly true, mostly the virus is spread through direct contact and droplets spread out during coughing and sneezing. It is rarely aerosolized into the surroundings and has a travel distance of less than a few feet even during a big sneeze. Simple masks are an effective barrier against droplets and do provide a level of protection. Although, it is still in debate over how much protection is provided.
Swine flu outbreak map
New Zealand and Israel confirmed cases of swine flu on Tuesday, the latest countries hit by a new strain that has killed up to 149 people in Mexico and threatens to become a pandemic.
The World Health Organisation has raised its alert level to phase 4, indicating a significantly increased risk of pandemic. Global markets tumbled for a second day on Tuesday on fears the outbreak could snuff out fragile signs of economic recovery.
Here are details of the latest number of cases, as confirmed by Reuters, the Centers for Disease Control, and the World Health Organization.
UPDATE: A new, up-to-date map can be found on the Reuters Swine Flu page.
Hi my name is Greg and Id like to give guidance to those who may be confused about the onset of swine flu. It is my opinion based on the evidence available from the health authorities and the height of alert of the pandemic coming, the closing of schools communities in other countries and the death figures available that it is now the time to use the scout motto of be prepared. I to live in Geelong Australia and I am a father of 4 young boys and my family including my pregnant ex wife who is staying with me via my direction are all now quarantined. Stock piles of food have already been purchased and home schooling for my youngest 2 school aged children are removed from school and restricted to our home. No contact with anyone outside our immediate family is permitted and entry into our home is not permitted. So this may appear extreme but the evidence available has been sufficant to impliment the actions I have taken and as history has clearly shown I do not want any of my family to be on the list of the millions that have died due to previous pandemics. I rather have over reacted and still look at my children as they sleep in there bed rather than a coffin so its your choice as to whether you act now or act when its too late. I hope that my opinion has helped you make good decisions and my family wish you the very best during these dark days that lay ahead of us all.
Yours most faithfully,
Greg and Family
Pandemic alerts, by the numbers
The World Health Organization could raise its pandemic alert level to phase 4 or 5 as a deadly swine flu outbreak shows no signs of slowing.
What does this mean?
The WHO designates six phases of pandemic alert for informing the world of the seriousness of the threat and the need to launch more intense preparations and measures.
We’re currently at phase 3. A full-blown pandemic, level 6, denotes sustained, human-to-human spread over many countries of a new and serious virus.
Here are details of the six phases, along with the possible impact on financial markets:
PHASE 1: Low risk of human cases
I myself am not too worried, I take the facts from 6 different news sources, compare them and then come to my own conclusion. From what I can tell this is the flu on steroids, not bubonic plaugue. There is no need for fear mongering to sell more news.

It’s a shame the MotionBox has been bought so the service – and the slideshow – is no longer available online.
It would be great if you could somehow put it online again with other service.
