Democratic presidential hopeful John Edwards drew about 200 Iowans to a coffee shop on Monday evening as he tried to persuade voters that he is “more electable” than rival and Democratic front-runner Sen. Hillary Clinton.
But at least one Oskaloosa native at the Smokey Row Coffee Shop is leaning away from the former North Carolina senator and towards voting for the former first lady in Iowa’s crucial Jan. 3 caucuses.
Before Edwards appeared, Gary Garlinghouse, 27, said he has lots of friends — men and women — who like the idea of electing America’s first female president.

Voting for someone because of their gender?!? i guess these pups don’t remember Margaret Thatcher. Y’know, England’s Reagan?
Then again these are the people too young to be likely to show their faces at a caucus. i almost hope they do. A seasoned Iowa caucus goer always has a better reason for whoever they are backing than gender (or race) for that matter.
If Hillary supporters go into the caucus structure thinking that argument will win them votes rather than ridicule, they really are divorced from reality and the problems of your average American.
- Posted by bardonautWait a minute, please. John Edwards has never never said or even implied that he is more electable because he is a male or southern or anything demographic.
He is more electable because he is perceived as having more integrity, as less a part of the Washington establishment and as not a part of the Whitewater administration. In fact, that is what polls show. He IS more electable and likable and that has nothing to do with gender.
- Posted by LaneWow - I’m so glad there’s, like, balance to this story and all. Come on, guys - if the controversy of the week was whether or not the earth was round you’d spend days hunting up some guy in nowhere USA who’d swear it was flat.
Guess everyone but Edwards deserves balance, huh?
- Posted by Jen QBe nice to include some pertinent facts. Like, FACT: John Edwards does better than Hillary against the Republican frontrunners in 35 out of 50 states. Therefore, polls indicate that John Edwards is most electable.
Fact: The reporter was able to find someone who supported Hillary because of her gender.
- Posted by JeremiahWell, excuse me for thinking that this stupid video was actually going to be about John Edwards, like the title.
- Posted by framecopWith all due respect Andrea your story is really bad. Edwards has a crowd of 200 and you write about one person who says they will vote for Hilliary? I guess that means the other 199 are voting for Edwards.
