U.S. Rep. Ron Paul — the soft-spoken Texan who has opposed the Iraq war and a ban on same-sex marriages — had something to cheer about in losing the opening round in the race for the U.S. presidency.
Though Paul finished fifth in the Iowa Republican caucuses, the 72-year-old maverick placed far ahead of former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani, who is running first in national polls.
With more than 85 percent of the precincts reporting, Paul had 10 percent of the vote compared to 4 percent for Giuliani who spent little time in the state. Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee won with 34 percent.

[...] Paul Beats Giulianihttp://blogs.reuters.com/trail08 /…t-runner-in-iowa/ [...]
- Posted by Ron Paul’s 10% In Iowa Shocks Establishment Media « noworldsystem.comI guess the media is finding it a little more difficult to control the election process with most of the population having access to the internet.
- Posted by ehPaul’s in good shape. He was competitive with McCain and Thompson, who were well-known nationally for years. Huckabee was carried by the fundamentalists, who won’t be there in such numbers in many other states. Romney spent tons of money in Iowa over a long period of time and got a slap in the face for his efforts. So the top two will fall back into the pack. This is a real horse race, folks, one that the future of the US is potentially riding on. I’m sending Paul more money.
- Posted by Doc WYes, PLEASE change the part of “and a ban on same-sex marriages”.
- Posted by NicholeTrue he doesn’t want a federal law requiring all states to recognize same-sex marriages.. he wants to leave it up to the states. And personally I don’t think he’s against gay marriage. It’s all up to the states in the end.
The blackout is truly awe inspiring. The hole in CNN’s pie chart all night. This morning NPR skipping over Paul to discuss the differences between Duncan Hunter and Fred Thompson. And the reasons they give for Hunter’s success up to this point were all reasons why Paul has a following. The reason Hunter might drop out: No money. Well we know Paul has money. But, no mention all the same. Where do these orders come from? Thanks Reuters. Unfortunately, I don’t think Paul’s campaign can do without radio and TV.
- Posted by AaronYou say, “U.S. Rep. Ron Paul — the soft-spoken Texan who has opposed the Iraq war and a ban on same-sex marriages”. I don’t think he wants to ban same-sex marriages. Though he doesn’t personally agree with it, he just wants the central government to not be involved with it.
- Posted by jhHere in Texas Ron Paul’s Home State he was not even mentioned in the San Antonio Express News as finishing 5th yet all over my city there is a ton of support! GO RON PAUL! I have even seen his name written in chalk on major highway walls. Keep the faith and the support! The media can try to black him out, but our time is now! Let the truth be known and keep your support.
- Posted by JoeLet’s face it. The fact that Iowans did not get the message (or don’t understand the message)is an indication of the national response. Of course, we must work all the harder in the coming weeks. Common sense tells us to begin considering our next moves should Ron Paul fail to sway the primary electorate sufficiently. At this juncture of history we must not give up without a fight. The major media are primarily responsible for elections, which are a scam anyway (see http://bigeye.com/elections.htm). For the critique of the media, see http://newswatch.org
Courage, my friends!
- Posted by Randolph BourneThanks, Reuters (and Thomas Ferraro) for reporting the news.
- Posted by JacquieMedia black out for sure. Last night on the cnn pie chart for Republicans the gray out everything below 13% failing to show Ron. Yet on the Democratict pie chart they show a slice of pie for Richardson at 1%. Whats up with that?
- Posted by Philip DimonWhy did CNN not run the Larry King interview of Dr. Ron Paul? I watched the interview on dailypaul here’s the link (http://www.dailypaul.com/node/20050) and it was fair and balanced. Why is the MSM so afraid of Dr. Paul?? Ron Paul is the last hope for America all the rest are just more of the recycled trash we have had since 1963, when they assassinated Kennedy and put that buffoon Johnson in office.
- Posted by Bob VineThere were only a few points separating McCain, Thompson, and Paul, yet the media blackout of Paul continues pretty much unfettered. Fox New and the major networks are actually making excuses for 4% Rudy, while not even mentioning Paul. Fox News should have their FCC license revoked for trying to unfairly influence the election.
Regardless, thanks for reporting the news Reuters.

You all deserve your fate, your misery.
Ron Paul finished 5th? Hmmm. Here on the West Coast, NBC didn’t even mention his name during the entire broadcast. When the results were finally announced, Paul wasn’t shown even shown on the chart. I believe NBC had Thompson in 5th place. While NBC talked about how much money Huckabee and Romney spent in Iowa, nothing was ever said about the $20 million Paul raised in the last quarter and what it bought him. And I can’t count the number of times the words “major candidates” were used as a way of dismissing Paul. NBC never uttered his name once! I wish I had a screen shot of the final NBC results showing that Paul’s name did not appear.
- Posted by BrendaCongratulations go out to Ron Paul, with the media blackout, he has done well. If there is ever a time for change, it is now and this can be done by only one candidate named Ron Paul. My challenge to anyone reading this, go check out U.S.Senator Ron Paul’s past voting record and read it for yourself. Ron Paul is not some rubber stamp. He is a man with sincere hope for a nation heading into hopelessness.
- Posted by I am for Ron PaulIf the results make you want to quit–quit, you don’t belong in this historic struggle for truth and freedom. We need stout hearted men and women not wimps and whiners.
If the results make you “mad as hell and your not going to take it anymore” take a short break then come out fighting with renewed resolve!
Myself, I’ll be face down in the gutter before I let these whores of humanity succeed.
Shame on Iowans I thought they were made of sterner stuff.
- Posted by James BeardsleyHas individual faith been reduced to such a level in America that we readily embrace any itinerant snakeoil salesman invoking Jesus’ name distracting us from the pickpockets, simply to feel like we are a people of faith? What else of merit has Huckabee to say? Why do you step over the only meaningful arbiter of change, (Ron Paul) to lift up and champion the CFR Huckster Huckabee? And what of change. The slogan of the Neo-cons alter ego the Neo-libs. Change? Hah! Their answer to affordable healthcare is to mandate, by force of law, we, the proletariat buy health insurance. Eureka! Why didn’t the Neo-Con Insurance CEO’s think of that one. Oh wait, one already has, Mit Romney. By the way, Demagogues, er, Democrats, did you not notice that the changing of the congressional guards in your favor produced the same outcome as their predecessors?
- Posted by pointlessOil topped 100 bucks a barrel today. Know why? It’s not because some refinery workers caught the flu or the OPEC countries are having a tif or any other asinine excuse sold today by the enemies media. It’s because the enemies Federal Reserve Bank Notes are beginning their inevitable decline into nothingness just as Germany’s banks, owned by the Feds current owners, did in the 1920’s. We’re talking inflation to the trillionth degree literally! Look it up. Ron Paul knows this. Ron Paul has tried to warn you. He seeks to remedy this. You won’t hear any of it. No you democrats would rather have a President that stands up against your perceived bullies and passes hate speech bills to shut them up. You’re still not as lame as those willing to sacrifice their sons as cannon fodder for another countries best interests so long as the Head Honcho refers to his holiday tree as a Christmas tree, hidden by the Gigantic Menorah though it may be. Isn’t ignorance bliss? Pass the lobotomy, please?
I went and voted, and witnessed firsthand how the media is manufacturing this next election far in advance. Ron Paul cleaned up in my town, yet the media does not even mention it. If you truly are Americans get off your dead seats and make this country a better place, or violence could follow another rigged election..We will not stand for puppet Americans who complain, and do nothing but cry when our country falls. It will be open season, for the lot of you, so wake up and make a difference. Your forefathers would be ashamed of what you have become, spinless ,T.V. addicted whining children, with a 1st grade grasp of politics. The time of sitting on the sidelines is over, or we all are. Not just America, but the world as well. This is truth, and cannot be distorted. You let me down fellow Iowans, only the weak are afraid of the cold, or making our represenatives in goverment keep their word. Your time will come, and your cries for help will fall on deaf ears, as you are selfish children who deserve what you get..
- Posted by DantesNot bad considering the mainstream media blackout that continues into the reporting of the results.
- Posted by BobThank you for a positive report!
