MANCHESTER — Is it possible to have two comeback kids in one night? Hillary Clinton, 60, and John McCain, 71, may not be kids anymore but they both earned the title tonight.
Democratic presidential hopeful Clinton took the prize of New Hampshire despite opinion polls predicting a double-digit win for Democratic candidate Barack Obama.
“We came back tonight because you spoke loudly and clearly,” Clinton said. “You want this campaign to be about you becasue there is so much at stake for our country.”
Her husband Bill, the original “comeback kid” in New Hampshire, came from behind to come in second in the state primary during his 1992 presidential bid.
And earlier tonight Republican McCain won his party’s primary after most political pundits thought he was out of the race because he overspent early in his White House bid and suffered from significant staff turnover.
But the 71-year-old McCain noted that he was not a “kid.”
“I’m past the age when I can claim the noun ‘kid’ no matter what adjective precedes it,” he said. “But tonight we sure showed them what a comeback looks like.”
