U.S. House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi says she’s drawing heat from fellow Democratic lawmakers as well as people across the nation for refusing to move to impeach President George W. Bush or Vice President Dick Cheney.
“I go through airports, and people have buttons as if they knew I was coming,” Pelosi said with a smile, mimicking a protester pointing to an “Impeach” button on their chest.
But the California Democrat said she is sticking to her position that trying to remove Bush or Cheney would be divisive, and she added, most likely unsuccessful. If the House voted to impeach Bush and Cheney, a two-thirds vote would be needed in the closely divided Senate to oust them.
Many Democrats and civil liberties groups have accused the Bush administration of misleading the United States into the Iraq war and violating the rights of U.S. citizens with its warrantless surveillance program. The White House denies the charges.
In helping Democrats win back control of Congress in 2006 from
Republicans, Pelosi said she would not push for impeachment despite a number of calls to do so.
Speaking with reporters, she recalled that she wanted to focus on unifying the nation, passing the Democrats’ legislative agenda — not picking an impeachment fight with the White House.
“It was my belief that an impeachment of the Vice President or the President … would be very divisive in our country, and that is what I believed then,” Pelosi said. “It should have come to no surprise when I became Speaker I said it again, and I continue to hold that view.”

Pelosi needs to be thrown out along with all the other traitors. If I steal a candy bar, I will go to jail…but I guess laws do not apply to the rich. It is time for us to revolt, people. Those in charge do not give a rats ass about how we feel or what we want. We should be rioting in the streets.
- Posted by VicThis once-great nation has been “divided” since the Florida ballot scam of 2000. The nation has moved so far to the Neocon Right that any compromise that the Democrats are able to achieve still produces the conservative agenda. Perhaps donating to Cindy sheehan’s campaign and supporting her efforts will send a message that the Constituion must always be upheld, and we can still be a nation of laws.
- Posted by Charles McCulloughThe Democratic leadership continues to disappoint. Reed and Pelosi need to be removed from office for not upholding the Constitution. Our leaders must be held accountable. These criminals must be brought to justice. If Clinton could have impeachment proceedings brought against him because of a BJ, it makes no sense to sit on all the instances of constitutional violations by the current individuals occupying the White House.

She has a legal responsibility to enforce US law.
- Posted by martin weissShe has said that she considers herself a “leader”. Well, a judas goat is a leader and that’s not much of a distinction.
Ms. Pelosi, you are a representative of the people who pay you. Accepting their money while failing to represent them is a crime.
Let there be no mistake, this criminal invasion of Iraq is mass murder, and Pelosi is complicit. No wonder she’s reluctant to pursue Justice.
When is she going to start standing up for the American people…as so many others before have said, it’s not what “SHE” wants, it’s what we want…biggest mistake ever was electing her to this spot, she forgets she is doing the “people’s work”
- Posted by JanePelosi and Reid do not deserve to be returned to their Congressional seats let alone their leadership positions. They have been complete and utter failures in that they are afraid to take the action that the voters who put them into their positions demand. It is time to elect people who listen to their constituents.
- Posted by A Fine Pinot NoirPolitial punishment and publish shame should be delivered to California and Nevada voters who return them to Congress.
I am afraid that what Pelosi is afraid of is the Anthra curse. After 911 the two Democrats in positions of power enough to investigate what happened got anthrax in their mailboxes. Would that stop you from investigating? Or maybe you could count up the invetigative journalistic dead for a clue. Gary Webb?
- Posted by TOMMY EASELSINCE THE LEADERS IN CONGRESS REFUSE TO LISTEN TO THE PEOPLE? AND TO DO THEIR JOBS?… THEIR PAY SHOULD BE SUSPENDED AND THEIR HEALTH CARE STOPPED AND ALL PENSIONS STOPPED. IF WE ALL QUIT WORKING.. AND ALL QUIT BUYING.. AND ALL JUST GO ON “STRIKE” ?…. THEY WILL SOON FEEL IN THE POCKET.. WHAT WE HAVE FELT FOR OVER 7 YEARS… BOOT THEM IN THE PURSE… WHERE THEY SEEM TO HAVE THEIR EARS.. OK?
- Posted by frances l. brightWell, it looks like there are only two recourses we have for Pelosi. The San Francisco area has to vote her out or we need a revolution in this country while we still don’t have arms control.
- Posted by SuzyPelosi is abdicating her responsibility to protect the constitution. These villains should be brought to justice. There is no partisan issue here. It is what is SUPPOSED to be done. Saying it will divide us is absurd. The whole country, except for about 25%, want to see these traitors pay for their crimes. I assume Pelosi means it will divide the House and Senate - it sure as hell won’t divide the country!
- Posted by Michael LoweryIsn’t the point of holding monsters accountable to justice _always_ inherently “divisive”? We very much _want_ to weed them from the herd and set them as an example that no one should emulate under threat of punishment.
When was the last time some murderer was successful in pleading, “Please, judge, don’t send me to prison. It would break my mother’s heart, and my home boys would hate you for it”?
Pelosi is either a treasonous fool purposefully neglecting her constitutional _duty_ to impeach or she is an ass-protecting war criminal herself who was in on the torture briefings and said, “Cool!” One or the other. The _worst_ thing we can do is let Bush retire to Crawford spouting cancerous rhetoric across the nation like some American Augusto Pinochet.

this administration undermines our democracy. At the very
least, Impeachment hearings would shed light on all of this
and begin the process of restoring our constitution and
democratic processes.
We no longer trust Congress or you. Your judgement is
not better than ours, the people’s. Your behavior is
self-serving. What are you waiting for? Civil disobedience
and uprisings? Well, they are coming!
Just wait (as you have been doing) for the reactions
of the people as we slip into a depression that you and
your colleagues have allowed to take place by your
passive approach to greed and power.
While I would never want to life the chaos of the impeachment of Bill Clinton, I certainly recall that no one back then was concerned about the division it would cause. And this was for actions that I felt were did not warrant impeachment. The censure he received for lying about Monica Lewinski were a proper and measured response.
That being said.. I think Pelosi’s response is utterly fantastic. But I feel that she is doing this in order no to upset the applecart, and derail and otherwise Democratic”shoo-in” for president. With focus on the war and the economy, the Republicans don’t have a chance. But with an impeachment, especially in this last year, those chances are not nearly as high. So politics plays a part. She is right… we will never get them convicted of any crime. There would be WAY TOO MUCH PARTISAN OBSTRUCTION.
But now we have TRUE WAR CRIMINALS that have lead our country down a dangerous path, and they will be leaving in a year, without any accountability of what they have done.
If it is felt that they committed high crimes and misdemeanors that would warrant impeachment, then they should face impeachment trials.

Nancy has forgotten what the Good Christian, “Rat Wingers” did to Bill Clinton, and over what?
“Fancy Nancy” has a short memory; as I can recall GW “Fredo” Bush screaming that he is a “UNITER,NOT A DIVIDER”, over and over. His “Deferment Dick” war Vice President, growling that, “Bush will restore Honor, Integrity and Respect back to the Oval office on the day he takes office”way back in 2000.
Gas was $1.25/gallon when the Harken Energy CEO was appointed office.
Bush, not fearing a very winnable impeachment fight, continues to operate above the law, and the will of the American people, on numerous, unchecked issues.
Like the song says “You Missed Again”,Nancy,
A good Impeachment Trial and a Nuremboug style war Crimes trial; with some corporate criminal indictments is just what our country wants, and needs.
Gitmo and Abu Ghraib for Bush and his henchmen, If convicted, of course!

(I told ya so in 2000)
WHAT A MESS! ALTHOUGH EVERTHING CANNOT BE REMEDIED BY THE IMPEACHMENTS, IT WOULD BE A START. PELOSI HAS AN OBLIGATION THAT SHE IS IGNORING. SHE SHOULD BE ASHAMED OF HERSELF FOR NOT FOLOWING THROUGH WITH WHAT THE PEOPLE WANT. I THINK AN IMMPEACHMENT WOULD BE A LESSON TO MANY POLITICIANS.
- Posted by DEE STILESYou are all right! She allies herself with the crimes of this administration. She and most of congress are complicit criminals taking us with them. They are suppose to serve us not us serve them. Let’s take them down, impeach and replace!

Not so good, huh?
What Pelosi is REALLY doing, is protecting President Bush’s ass, so that a future democratic President can abuse the Constitution the same as he did.
Shame on her.
- Posted by Del WassoDear Speaker Pelosi:
Your refusal to hold even Hearings on whether impeachment is warranted for Vice President Cheney is not only a case of robbing American citizens of justice, but you are robbing your own Democratic voters of at least $100,000,000 (at least one-hundred million dollars) worth of PR and campaign funding. John Kerry raised one-hundred-million for his Democratic presidential campaign in 2004, but squandered that money with a non-confrontational campaign that didn’t give voters a single “peg to hang their hats on.” Speaker Pelosi, “Time for a change” is an anemic, colorless, pathetic way to say “Throw the bums out for gross corruption in war-contracts, lies-to-war, and gross incompetence in conduct of that war.” (Such incompetence in the conduct of the war including allowing insurgents to loot Iraqi ammunition dumps and Baghdad government offices as US troops did KP duty; $9 billion dollars lost in Iraqi government funds disbursed by US “Viceroy” Bremer in first weeks of war, alone, with no accounting whatsoever; and running kangaroo courts for female privates accused of “abuse,” while the president and vice president demanded the right to torture prisoners to death in name of “national security,” at their own discretion with no oversight, etc. etc. etc.) In the 3rd presidential debate John Kerry stood there like a punching bag, refufsing to reply that President Bush had a lot of nerve to call him, John Kerry, a “Flip-Flopper!’ on national TV, when he, President Bush, had no only said “I’m no longer concerned about bin Laden anymore” after previously saying “We’re going to get bin Laden Dead or Alive” while standing on the rubble of 9-11; but thjere it was the eve of election 2004, and President Bush was bragging that bin Laden sending videos to influence American elections was proof that he, President Bush, was defending America’s security!
Madam Speaker, you are following in the weak, and frankly disgraceful, leads of Al Gore and Joe Lieberman in 2000; Tom Daschle and Joe Lieberman again in 2002, and John Kerry in 2004, all of whom refused to speak up for American citizens robbed or abused by the history of Mr. Bush’s abuse of powers. In 2000, Al Gore refused to speak up for poor and minority children kicked out of pre-school, after-school, and health-care programs by then Texas Governor George W. Bush. Gov. Bush SLASHED funding for those programs, in order to - what else? - push through TAX CUTS for Texas’ wealthiest individuals and corporations. Those social programs were PROVEN to SAVE TEXAS TAXPAYERS MONEY, by giving children preventative health care and thus keeping them healthy and out of emergency rooms when untreated health problems became serious. The pre-school programs were proven to save the state money by keeping children productive and prepared for later schooling, reducing drop-out rates and later arrest and incarceration rates. It didn’t matter how effective those public education programs were; Governor George W. Bush was determined to slash them, and Vice President Al Gore was determined not to speak up for poor and minority children. Vice President Gore topped this awful campaign shortcoming by REFUSING to FORCE the press, media, and public to confront Dick Cheney’s dealings with Saddam Hussein’s Iraq all through the late 1990s behind the back of the US enforced UN sanctions on Iraq. As Chairman and CEO of Halliburton corporation during that time, Mr. Cheney had used Halliburton’s European subsidiaries to sell Iraq millions of dollars worth of oil field equipment, even as US aircraft were bombing Iraqi positions in the no-fly zone, and Iraq was trying to shoot down those US jets. Even the Washington Post acknowledged that “Halliburton’s Iraq dealings are greater than Cheney has admitted”
http://www.globalpolicy.org/security/san ction/iraq1/oilforfood/2001/0627chen.htm
but in a gross case of refusing to inform voters of such a huge, underlying scandal, Vice President Al Gore and Senator Joe Lieberman REFUSED to use such a campaign-killing scandal against the Cheney-Bush campaign all through the summer and election season of 2000.
Senator Lieberman and Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle REPEATED this “Free Pass” for Cheney and Bush scandals in 2002. Tom Daschle threw the Senate Enron investigation into the Senate Government Affairs Committee then chaired by Senator Lieberman, who promptly sat on, quashed, and wet-blanketed any energetic or determined investigation - thus ROBBING Democratic voters, activists, and candidates of their best issue in 2002, the opportunity to TIE ENRON FRAUD to the Mr. Bush’s long record of close association with Enron. Enron Chairman Ken Lay had only been Mr. Bush’s number-one campaign donor in two Texas gubernatorial campaigns, Gov. Bush’s 2000 Republican presidential primary campaign, the 2000 presidential election campaign, the 2000 Florida legal recount battle, and Enron also was the #1. contributor to the Bush-Cheney 2001 gala inauguration committee. In return for that largesse, President Bush and Vice President Cheney held federal investigators at bay from investigating Enron’s financial fraud, and even allowed Enron to coordinate power-plant shutdowns and transmission overloads, in order to jack-up rates that California and Washington state rate payers would be forced to pay for electricity.
By allowing Senator Lieberman to “Wet Blanket” the Senate Enron investigation, Senator Daschle robbed American citizens of timely justice, robbed California and Washington rate-payers of timely relief, and robbed Democratic voters of their best issue in 2002 (the opportunity to tie President Bush to Enron fraud), and as a result, Senator Daschle, only the majority leader of the senate from a small-population state, managed to loose his own re-election as well. And good riddance: justice delayed is jusice denied, and Senator Daschle NEVER put JUSTICE for ENRON FRAUD VICTIMS ahead of his own campaign and elections anemic calculations for mid-term election 2002 - which he lost despite his “get along, be nice” attitude towards Republican malfeasance!
And ofcourse as mentioned above, in 2004 John Kerry ran an incredibly anemic campaign, one that Washington Post cartoonist Pat Oliphant portrayed Kerry as “Rip van Winkle, SLEEPING through the entire campaign season,” Mr, Kerry too elitist, isolated, and unwilling to criticize a fellow Skull & Bones (Yale) fraternity brother, despite the long record of abuses of power I have tried to outline above.
Madam Speaker, you are now, already, part of that dismal Democratic record of giving a “Free Pass” to Republican malfeasance. After election 2004 was over, federal independent prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald won a dramatic perjury and obstruction of justice conviction against Presidential Senior Advisor, and (concurrently) Vice Presidential Chief of Staff Lewis ‘Scooter’ Libby. Mr. Libby was only a “Top 5″ member of the Bush-Cheny White House inner circle, as Vice President Cheney’s Chief of Staff Mr. Libby was only “outranked” in the White House hierarchy by Mr. Bush and Mr. Cheney themselves, and White House Chief of Staff Andrew Card, and White House Political Affairs director Karl Rove. It was within this circle that the plan to “out” CIA “NOC” (non-official cover) undercover spy Valerie Plame’s identity, and you, Madam Speaker, joined Republicans in minimizing the criminality of this scheme. You did nothing to demand that President Bush NOT pardon Mr. Libby in the post-conviction phase of the trial; which sure enough President Bush did, giving a conditional commutation of sentence to Mr. Libby that still afforded him his 5th Amendment rights that effectively prevented prosecutors from pushing the conviction to its logical conclusion - because everyone understands that Washington career super-lawyer Mr. Libby would never in a million years have discussed the secret identity of a CIA operative to the Washington press, without strict orders from above.
Madam Speaker, ON THIS ONE ISSUE, ALONE, you are now complicit with OBSTRUCTION OF JUSTICE after the fact, and like Tom Daschle and Joe Lieberman in 2002 re the Enron scandal, you are DENYING JUSTICE to American’s harmed by the White House’s abuse of power.
Additionally, as leader of the Democratic Party, you failed to take notice or make any move re Christine Jennings loss of her election efforts to win a congressional seat in Florida District 13, Katherine Harris’ old seat. Florida Republicans were so appalled at the prospect of losing this “safe” Republican seat (which Ms. Harris would have won re-election to had she not given up the seat to run an improbable senate campaign)that they instructed District 13 electronic voting machines to swallow 13,000 THIRTEEN THOUSAND uncounted votes, so-called “undervotes” in a congressional, off-year election. Neighbouring districts had “undervote” tallies in the low one-thousand range, but you, Speaker Pelosi, are completely unconcerend that possibly more than 10,000 Florida voters had their vote rejected in 2006 in one local congressional election, alone.
Madam Speaker, I have tried to lay out the case, that at every opportunity, at every turn, at every case of clear and present Republican, White House abuse of power, you have sided with Republican talking-points to minimize the scandal. That makes you part of the Republican obstruction of justice process. You are repeating the sad, anemic, and pathetic “leadership” of Al Gore, Tom Daschle, and John Kerry, and in doing so you are taking after Joe Lieberman, the AIPAC and war-lobby super-lobbyist.
Madam Speaker, your refusal to hold hearings on impeachment is a clear case of arrogance and self-importance. It is not about you, Speaker Pelosi, but about American justice and the primacy of the Constitution over abuses of power. And, finally, in refusing to hold Bush-Cheney abuses of power to the light of day, you are already helping them prepare for a restoration, by denying American voters and citizens of the true facts, of the true extent of their malfeasance and abuse of power. You are forcing Democratic voters to dig deeply into their pockets, to undo the Republican PR spin that “nothing is wrong here, any problems in the war in Iraq, in the US economy, in the war-on-terror, are the fault of Democratic leaders obstructing the president’s leadeship.”
Madam Speaker, you are enabling Republican campaigns and public perceptions not only in this election, but for elections for decades to come.
- Posted by vvvvciAs such, you are firmly aligned with the Republican neo-con war and abuse of powers agenda, and against your own Democratic voters.
pelosi is aiding and abetting war criminals, we need to hold her responsible.
