LOS ANGELES - Illinois Sen. Barack Obama has made a promise to his kids: if we win the White House, you can have a dog.
The Democratic presidential hopeful told a rally in California on Thursday that his two little girls were excited about the prospect of him becoming president but not so happy
about moving to Washington.
“They’re very excited, although my 9-year-old and my 6-year-old, I’m not sure they want to move. They like Chicago,” he said, answering a little boy’s question about his kids. “We promised them that we’ll get (a) dog.”
Presidential pets have long fascinated children in the United States, prompting former first ladies Barbara Bush and Hillary Clinton — Obama’s rival for the 2008 nomination — to write books about their animals.

Hi, my name is Madison Statz. I’m a 10 year old Yorkshire Terrier, Black & Tan. My person, Sharon, adopted me from a Yorkshire Terrier rescue center. I think that a Yorkshire Terrier would love to have the Obama children as their persons. Yorkies love people, other puppies, and kittens. We Yorkies are highly intelligent, can train our person(s) easily, love to show other puppies how our person(s) can throw a ball, sing, dance and drop puppy treats into our mouth. We love lap people and will turn our person(s) into a lap person if they aren’t a natural lap person. Finally, Yorkies have hair not fur, therefore we are hypoallergenic. Any Yorkie would love to have their persons, the Obama children, brush their hair, just as I love to have my person, Sharon, brush mine. When she’s finished brushing me, I give her lots of kisses and let her give me a treat - yum yum. I will put the word out for my puppy friends to help a Yorkie, Black & Tan, find the Obama children as their persons. I’m sure that any Yorkie would be proud to call the Obama children their persons.
