LONG BEACH, Calif. - Republican White House hopeful Mitt Romney confessed on Monday to casting a vote for a Democrat on a few occasions - but only when there was no Republican on the ballot.
The man who has built his campaign in recent days on painting front-runner Sen. John McCain as a liberal said that he’d always voted Republican if there was a Republican on the ballot.
But he noted that in his home state of Massachusetts, voters can decide between voting in the Democratic or Republican primary, and sometimes he had voted tactically.
“Those of you from Massachusetts know that sometimes there’s no contest on the Republican side in a primary so you pull the Democratic ballot and you make mischief,” he told reporters on his campaign plane on Monday.
“I got a chance to vote against Bill Clinton more than once.”

How is this news? This conversation was in jest, yet you present it as a silver bullet of some sorts. The information coming out of Reuters seems to be more and more slanted every time I check. Another article posted today stated:
McCain won the last two contests, in South Carolina and Florida, to seize the front-runner’s slot in a hard-fought Republican race…
It seems very convenient the article left out the races in Michigan, Nevada and Maine, all of which took place following South Carolina. I think you and those like you who have been spinning the news should be ashamed of yourselves. I don’t know how you can get up and face yourselves in the morning with a clear conscience.

[...] Clinton?s campaign manager Terry McAuliffe made phone calls. I?m voting for the one… Romney admits mischievous voting in Mass. primaries: But he noted that in his home state of Massachu… So you think the US should have a black president or maybe a woman…: We have California, [...]

The Hill: Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) is the only presidential candidate in Congress to have missed a major vote on the Iraq war this year.
The National Journal: “Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., …missed more than half of the votes in both the economic and foreign-policy categories. On social issues, which include immigration, McCain received a conservative score of 59.”
HOW MANY MORE MEN AND WOMEN IS MCCAIN GOING sacrifice to preserve Bush’s war legacy?
- Posted by PeterVAGeorge is right. I too saw that other article he referred to. Why does the media seem to be so biased and ignore Romney’s wins? I agree with Hugh Hewitt when he mentioned the “media-generated “McCain resurrection”. The media continually neglects important points of context. That’s not reporting; that’s trying to exert influence.
- Posted by mandmYour title for this article is evidence of your bias–the title makes it sound like he was committing election fraud. I doubt any objective reporter would frame the story like this. Now I know in the future to disregard anything you report, not just about Romney, but everyone else too.
Romney is the only one with enough brains to run this country, and run it well.
- Posted by KarlThe previous comments posted indicate most will not get this article. The author should not be “ashamed” in the least. The headline grabs a reader into quickly getting to the conclusion that Mitt Romney did his duty as a conservative in these votes by going against Clinton in any reasonable way possible.
- Posted by S. KittelIf McCain takes it today, it will be a sad day for the true GOP. Regardless of ANYthing else, the man votes and campaigns with moderates an liberals. McCain, as a candidate, doesn’t bring anything to the table more than Romney other than a strong war stance. With Petraeus succeeding, we don’t need a hothead like McCain who’s intent on leveraging our position in this dynamic world more than it already has been.
There truly are psotions candidate offer that are too much of a good thing. Bi-partisanship is good, but compromise, like McCain has over and over, is not good. Being humane is good, but going too far with that will result in the McCain opinion that we shouldn’t subject murdering cowardlty terrorists to a harmless practice of waterboarding to save American lives, or again, being so “humane” that we should give away our needed jobs and hurt our balance of wages by giving them to illegal immigrants who’ll work for less.
Romney is the opposite. He has so many good qualities too list entirely, the Olympics showed his managment skills, his governing of blue MA was leadership, as was his impeccable business record.
NEED TO HEAR IT CLEARLY?: MCCAIN FINISHED 5TH FROM THE BOTTOM OF HIS CLASS WHILE ROMNEY GOT A LAW DEGREE AND MASTERS AT HARVARD AT THE SAME TIME GRADUATING WITH VERY HIGH MARKS.
The biggest issue facing America isn’t terrorism…it’s the economy, because we can’t win the war on terror or be the super power we are without our engine…our economy. There is no way to argue McCain is the candidate to handle the biggest problem we face.
Conservatives: VOTE STRONGLY TODAY..DON’T LOWER YOUR STANDARDS BECAUSE YOU THINK WE NEED MCCAIN TO BEAT HILLARY OR BARACK. HE IS THE SAME. VOTE LIKE TRUE REPUBLICAN.
I’ve been wavering on who to vote for and i’ve decided to go with Mitt. with much listening and though i see McCain stating incorrect accusations as hard or as he would say “straight” facts. these are straight lies.. i’m sick of how the media is leaving out key facts about romney and skewing the ideas of americans that McCain has won and there is no other choice. They even forget Huckabee is in the race still.
Romney you get my vote and i will help others to open their eyes and see this nonsense.
- Posted by AaronI agree VAGeorge, I am very disappointed with Reuters’ reporting on the elections. I see blatant spin and exaggerations on a daily basis, and now they are picking up Britteny spears stories… What was once a great read is now just another Faux News. Goodbye Reuters, I no longer respect you.
- Posted by mrbTouche and AMEN to what VAGeorge said! It is clear you have an agenda - I thought Reuters just published the truth. I will go elsewhere for the facts from now on.
- Posted by JohnI am a Republican and although I did not vote for Mr. Romney in the Florida Primary, I find nothing fundamentally wrong with what he said. I believe that anyone who blindly votes the straight party ticket does not exercise the kind of maturity and discernment that I want out of my President. I am ready for an America that can get past partisan politics to get something constructive done for a change. Voting should be done thoughtfully, considering issues and philosophical stances. I personally equate voting a straight party ticket with the same ill-advised thinking that some voters use when picking a candidate based on looks or hair style.
- Posted by red_faced_gopI’m from Massachusetts. Mitt Romney did nothing for our state while he was the governor except leave us with a huge deficit. For the final two years he was absent most of the time. He sold us out and left us with a Democrat because the state was so disgusted with him. He also changes positions constantly. I’m with McCain all the way - at least he’s consistent, and loyal to his constituents.
- Posted by MeganPS. However, I don’t hold the comment against him - everyone in MA has done that one time or another.
- Posted by MeganTouche from this part of the country. I only wish I had beat VAGeorge with his thoughts and comments. The biases being exhibited by the news media against Romney and in favor of McCain to the extent it has I don’t think I have ever seen. I wonder how much of this is due to religion? Or is it simply those of the media who hang out in the ‘gutter’ so much have such a hard time believing there is such a person as Mitt Romney who is so clean cut.
