Clinton says MSNBC anchor’s remark deeply offensive

ORONO, Maine - Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton said she took “deep offense” at comments by an MSNBC anchor about her daughter Chelsea’s role in her campaign and said she still had not decided whether to participate in a debate sponsored by the network later this month.rtr1wvm1.jpg

“I am a mom first and a candidate second and I found the remarks incredibly offensive,” Clinton said at a news conference on Saturday at the University of Maine. ”I have sent a letter to the head of NBC  expressing the deep offense that I took.”

She was referring to a remark from MSNBC’s David Shuster, who questioned on Thursday whether Chelsea was “sort of being pimped out in some weird sort of way” by the campaign because she was making calls to voters and giving speeches advocating for her mother.

MSNBC said in a statement on Friday that Shuster had apologized to the Clintons on-air for the remark and was suspended from broadcasts except to make the apology, but Clinton suggested in her letter to MSNBC that the cable network should go further to make amends.

“Nothing justifies the kind of debasing language that David Shuster used and no temporary suspension or half-hearted apology is sufficient,” she said in the letter.

Pressed on whether she would participate in the debate that will be hosted by the network on Feb. 26, Clinton said: ”We’re going to wait and see how this plays out.”

Asked for a reaction to Clinton’s comments, the network said it stood by its earlier statement which also included MSNBC’s own apology.

Finally someone is making some sense. I thought the whole world had gone insane. I don’t know one African American who was offended by anything Hillary or Bill said about race. My African American friends agree that the media has gone nuts and is generating race problems to assist the Republicans in November by getting Obama the nomination. The Republicans need to remember once you open that box it’s hard to shut. It may come back and bite them in the but.

Yes, the youth are being pulled in, but remember they bought out the Hannah Montana concerts in less than five minutes in some areas. It’s that time for youth enthusiam. Unfortunately, in this day and time the media is hyping Obama; he talks good, he looks good, but what else? When his followers have been asked one, repeat one, policy he has stood for they insanely say “he gives me hope”, when policy is explained, they say he wouldn’t of voted for the war. He wasn’t able to vote.

Just because a network broadcasts news reports doesn’t mean all of it’s programming is news. Hardball, Olbermann, Tucker host shows which are referred to as ‘info-tainment’. A topic is raised and then a panel of “experts” opine for awhile. All of the ‘news’ channels do it.

David Schuster has received his slap on the wrist and should be reinstated post-haste. His comments could easily have been laughed off by the Clintons. I guarantee you neither Hillary nor Bill were the least bit upset over this ubiquitous phrase. As far as I’m concerned they must have perceived some political gain in deciding to cry fowl.

I wish the ‘crucify him’ crowd would stop and ask themselves what Schuster’s intent was when he spoke those harmless words. Have you never said something stupid and immediately wished you could snatch them back. That’s probably what happened, and it could happen to anyone.

As for the Clintons, me thinks they cried too much, too loudly.

Hillary Clinton is nothing more than a George W. Bush with Tears.

David went too far and he should be fired for his actions. Chris whacko needs to go, he is sexist.

All the media has given Obama a free pass. They should report news and keep their bias opinions out. I have stopped watching MSNBC.

Shame on the Clintons!! Shame on MSNBC!! This is America, and while it’s fine for the Clintons to be offended, that somebody used a term too hip for them to understand, the meaning was clear. It wasn’t wrong. The US gov is not permitted to put a working person out of a job for any reason. Certainly not something so banal as this.

Other broadcasters have used that expression to make the same point, on the same network. Only to it was directed at the other party. Goose Gander thing.

We never see Chelsea during all other occasions, so why now? A tool to prove ‘motherhood/sisterhood - I share your joy, pain…. yadayada.’ If we saw Chelsea more often, throughout ‘Events’ of National interest, and Slick Willie wasn’t her father, perhaps many of us would be much less cynical…but with the Clintons, or Bushs, cynical is a well earned label for anything these greedy little power-mongers do, or say. Blind obedience, or trust? You GOTTA be kidding!!!!!

The remark IS deeply offensive because it comes from a reporter and news channel who are supposed to remain UNBIASED in their coverage. This is not the case here. There is an extraordinary bias against Hillary, and Obama is clearly receiving a free ride.

As a foreign observer of the American nomination process, I have to say I’m astounded by the amount of bias in the reporting. Obama is fawned over and treated like a messiah, when as far as I have seen he offers no concrete plans and has little experience in bringing about anything of substance. Hillary on the other hand, in debates comes across as incredibly well-informed and she always offers every little detail about her future plans. I know I would vote for Hillary.

The problem is the media can paint whatever picture they like, and twist stories as they please, and Americans don’t have the intelligence to see through it.

I was wondering why the media hasn’t been talking about Obamas wife saying she didn’t know if she could vote for Hillary if she got the nomation.
‘If Pres. Clinton had said the same about Obama
It would have been “HELL and BRIMSTONE” raining down on him and Hillary from ALL of the Media.
I thought Joe Scarborugh was going to have a stroke when someone disagreed with him that Pres. Clinton had not brought the RACE Issue into the South Carolina race but it was Michelle Obama that first started talking about race.
I beleive Obama is Media genterated by all the media just to have Hillary defeated. All I can say is Be careful what you wish for.

I think the pundit was trying to point out that Chelsea is an extremely weak calculated response to Obama’s overwhelming connection with the youth in America.

Chelsea seems pained by the whole experience…

I know Bill cheated on his wife….and she shed calculated tears when she may lose a primary…but Hillary as a “sympathetic figure” is a little overboard.

Hillary….the “establishment candidate” hated by the media?

I refuse to have my emotions played with by Clinton strategists….albeit calculated tears…press conferences to protect supporters…or to finally admit that the average American donation is important.

Dizziness is the only thing you will get out of staying on the Clinton carousel…

This argument about “pimping someone out” may have somewhat of a generational fault line. Referring to “pimps” or i.e. “he or she is a pimp”, etc. is used in the 18 - 44 demographic primarily borrowed from the hip-hop culture. Look at post 42 which mentions other nominees “pimping” their kids - it was probably unconscious. So what’s the beef? Shuster attacking Chelsea or using the phrase? Should news journalist use it or does it make them look less professional? It probably does, I notice male journalist seem to think they can be more familiar or more informal in that respect. Remember when Anderson Cooper said to Fred Thompson: “What’s up with that?”. As for Hillary, well I recall the media calling George Bush out when his nephew, George P was speaking Spanish to the young ladies and the media suggested he was being used for his good looks and language abilities - it worked! Do I think there is a different standard for Hillary? Yes, I do. However, she claims to have 35 years of experience and suggests she can take whatever comes her way - well take this and move on. What her campaign tried to do to the Obama campaign in South Carolina is ten times more insidious. Now, if someone called Chelsea a “nappy headed ho” well I think there would be an outcry. And by the way , I’m a card carrying feminist!

It was a tactless remark but we still have freedom in the press in place. I think trying to silence the media or using the comment to get sympathy votes even more offensive.

It was an unfortunate choice of words - and an apology was issued. There are more important things to focus on. The President has to lead in an inspiring manner by his/her actions and words.

If people were so concerned about bias, they should consider Hillary’s close ties and her six years of experience on the Board of Walmart.

Walmart is being sued - the largest class action gender dicrimination suit ever filed - by 1.6 MILLION women workers.

Hillary has said nothing to support the women there and literally done nothing to help the women workers stop BIAS there in 22 years. She remains SILENT and seems more concerned about her 1,600 profitable shares of Walmart.

I want a President who is speaks out for 1.6 million women workers….. not just about her privileged daughter.

qster says:

“Pimping a woman is the equivalent of calling her a whore. Shuster should be fired. End of story.”

Like this fellow ‘qster”, Most of these folks who are jumping on the “David Shuter’s head on a platter” bandwagon with the Clintons do not even know the meaning of the word “pimp out”. Why, therefore, are they making these unintelligent comments?

Look up the meaning of the word, and I assure you, when you do, you would understand the context in which David Shuster used that vernacular, and it was not meant to be derogatory, or offensive as Hillary is making it to be. It does not have the notorious connotation that Bill and Hillary Clinton have made the several million morons we have in the US, who cannot read between the lines and CANNOT think for themselves, believe.

I urge bloggers to, each send an email to MSNBC Board, urging it to recall David Shuster to his normal duties, without any preconditions, immediately.

Like Senator HRC, I too am a mother and would certainly get offended if a comment was made by anyone, reporters or a private citizen. However she forgets that we live in a free speech society, right or wrong, offensive, derog or not.In fact there are more foul and offensive lanquage in our movies,tv programs, mtv, reality shows and yet no one gets suspended or fired!!I remembered vividly watching Bill Clinton denying the fact the he INDEED did not have a relationship with Monica Lewinsky, then shortly after admitting that he INDEED did have a intimate relationship with her!! He outright lied to our nation, but more importantly to GOD and yet he was never impeached!! Shame on our country or allowing him to still keep his JOB! Although I admire HRC in her courage to secure on the most important Position in our country, I find it very difficult to trust them knowing that her husband will be back in the White House!!

When Don Imus made his inappropriate comments, he was fired and rightly so. Now where are all the people and organizations who supported the victims of his verbal attack? It was wrong then and it is wrong now.

He should be fired. I don’t understand all this Hillary bashing. Bush used his two daughters who are more loose and amoral than any kids in the White house have been. Mr. And Mrs. Clinton should be commended for raising a wonderful, mature, intelligent and respectful daughter. She is an extremely educated person and works at a very good firm, unlike the Bush daughter who are as usual up to nothing earth-shaking and use the power and privilege of their father to sell their books, etc. Kerry used is whole family, Romney used his sons, Reagan used his kids, Bush used his, Edwards used his daughter too. Where was MSNBC when all these men were pimping their kids and wives. I still remember when the going got tough on Bush, he would send his wife, mother, sister, daughter to pimp, I’ll use the word since that is what it was.

I am tired of all this Hillary bashing and Clinton bashing in general by the media. Please put a stop to it, immediately. None of our past presidents have been perfect and the media needs to stop picking sides to get what they want and who they want elected. In my opinion that is the lowest form of reporting when it is so biased.

People from all sides need to rise above it and say enough is enough!
