DALLAS - A modern U.S. political ritual that accompanies elections, “the battle of the bumper stickers,” is gearing up again.
In an e-mail to its membership on Friday, the Republican Party of Texas said it had received over 1,300 submissions to its call for a 2008 election bumper sticker slogan.
It said it had narrowed the field down to five and that Texas Republicans had until high noon on July 3rd to vote for one of them. Presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama is unsurprisingly the explicit target of four of them.
The five finalists?
Obama for Change? That’s all you’ll have left in your pockets!
Obama won’t change me — I’m voting GOP
High gas prices? Thank a Democrat this November
Barack Obama? Liberal like McGovern, Prepared like Carter
Barack Obama — The Audacity of HYPE
But with many Americans driving less because of sky-high gas prices, it remains to be seen how much “air-time” bumper stickers will get on the roads this election year.

High gas prices? Thank a Democrat this November when they finally hold the oil execs accountable.

Brain dead and untruthful.
Why can’t the GOP stop lying???
These slogans are a disgrace to the memories of Reagan and Lincoln.
Shame on the TX GOP!

- Posted by JayAm I just tired? Can this story possibly be true? Is John McCain (who I’m leaning toward) actually having a contest to come up with a bumper sticker to represent his campaign?
- Posted by BillThose are some pretty bad bumper stickers.
–Obama for Change? That’s all you’ll have left in your pockets! - way too long for a catchy phrase on a bumper sticker
–Barack Obama? Liberal like McGovern, Prepared like Carter - Guess they’re targeting an older set here. I’m nearly thirty. Could tell you painfully little about Carter and I’ve never heard of McGovern. But I guess maybe obscurity is the point.
–Barack Obama — The Audacity of HYPE - they really want to sound scold-y here, don’t they? I know the point is to insult the other side, and audacity is a term used from an older generation to a younger or in a patronizing put-down way from a man to a woman (usually in programs that are set a bit back), but I don’t think that’s going to appeal to a younger set.
The GOP one isn’t very good, either, but not so bad as those listed above. It makes fun of his slogan, but doesn’t say anything. Then again, it’s a bumper sticker, and all it really needs to be is catchy.
I think the “High Gas Prices” one is best, but I have to say, I think they all are pretty awful. Better to say why your candidate is good than why the other guy is bad. I hate mudslinging. I guess it doesn’t alienate others as much as is does me, though.
Most disappointing about this article, though, is that it didn’t give me any Democrat bumper stickers so I could be equally surprised at how bad they are.

The Republican party is so out of touch.
None of those slogans are witty nor truthful.
Desperation apparently does not breed creativity.

I thought Bush, being the big oil man, was supposed to know how to keep them down? That’s what we were told when we voted for him. Now he wants to blame someone else? Disgusting!
I voted for Bush twice and I’m registered as a Republican, but I don’t plan to make the same mistake a third time.
I plan to “thank” the Republicans this November.
