LANSING, Mich. - Barack Obama’s aides have a better track record organizing his campaign than his birthday.
A gift they purchased for the Democratic presidential candidate, who turned 47 on Monday, went astray Sunday evening — left in the trunk of a taxi along with an aide’s suitcase.
“We got him a present that he really needs, and one of our guys was bringing it back and left it in the trunk of a cab last night,” communications strategist Robert Gibbs told MSNBC.
He said efforts were under way to recover the present, but was mum on exactly what the gift was.
Obama is celebrating his birthday with a campaign event in Michigan and a fundraiser in Boston.
With the polls showing him locked in a tight race with Republican John McCain, Obama is not taking many breaks from the campaign trail. He did have a private celebration of his birthday with family and friends on Sunday in Chicago.
The Illinois senator spent Monday morning in Lansing touting his proposals for dealing with soaring energy costs. The audience of about 1,550 sang happy birthday to him, as supporters have been doing for the past week.
Obama later flies to Boston for what is being billed as a “Birthday Celebration & Dinner” to raise money for his campaign and for the Democratic party’s coffers.
He will not stay long in solidly Democratic Massachusetts. After the event on Monday he will travel on to the battleground state of Ohio, where he and McCain are neck-and-neck in the polls.

Never to give their children birgthday or xmass present. yet there Hussein Ossama was accepting gifts on his birthday. how many campaign contributions did Obama recieve as birthday presents yesterday? i bet it was higher than the average day. If Obama had principles or was a man of his word he would have returned all presents, and would have returned all campaign donations that were given as birthday gifts since it was against his families principles, since he doesn’t have any princples, as is proven by his choice of church whose pastor was rabidly anti- white and anti- american for over ten years, he did not return them. he accepted them due to his leberally shown greed.
