WASHINGTON - Republican vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin has been widely criticized for citing Alaska’s proximity to Russia as foreign policy experience. But she is not backing down.
The Alaska governor, running mate to Republican presidential nominee John McCain in the Nov. 4 election, defended her position on Thursday in a rare one-on-one session with a reporter.
In only her third nationally televised interview since she was nominated earlier this month — this one on CBS with anchor Katie Couric — Palin was asked what she meant.
“That Alaska has a very narrow maritime border between a foreign country, Russia, and on our other side, the land — boundary that we have with — Canada. It– it’s funny that a comment like that was — kind of made to — I don’t know, you know? Reporters,” Palin said, explaining that she had been mocked.
Asked to explain why living near Russia enhances her foreign policy credentials, Palin responded: “Well, it certainly does because our — our next-door neighbors are foreign countries. They’re in the state that I am the executive of.”
Asked whether she had ever been involved in any negotiations, for example, with the Russians, Palin answered: “We have trade missions back and forth. We — we do– it’s very important when you consider even national security issues with Russia as Putin rears his head and comes into the air space of the United States of America, where — where do they go? It’s Alaska. It’s just right over the border. It is — from Alaska that we send those out to make sure that an eye is being kept on this very powerful nation, Russia, because they are right there. They are right next to — to our state.”

Well it was Reagan who pushed all this deregulation business full-bore, so if you’re going to laud him you also have an obligation to balance to show where he failed, and on the matter of watching over the long-term health of the economy it sure looks like he didn’t learn a bloody thing from the Depression. And you seem to be arguing about what the meaning of “experience” is, Brodie, so you’re only using the sophistic arguments that you accuse Obama of. If you ever bothered to look at what Congressmen and Senators actually do you’d probably think more highly of the ones who actually take their jobs seriously enough to go overseas to see things firsthand. I was at a talk Wednesday night by my Congressman and Charlie Wilson (yes, that Charlie Wilson) and I’m telling you I’d prefer someone with actual firsthand experience to a novice any day of the week when the s*%t hits the fan. And according to Wilson your buddy Reagan wholly endorsed what Wilson was doing in Afghanistan, warning him only to not let anyone else know about it. If you want to know which American was probably most instrumental in winning the Cold War it was Wilson since he came up with the idea of arming the Afghans with Stinger missiles so they could shoot down the Soviet helicopter gunships.

Unfortunately this isn’t nearly the worst. You must see her response saying she won’t blame Israel for attacking Iran ‘becuz we know who the bad guys are, and who the good guys are’.
Her ‘off-the-cuff’ remarks should be severely curtailed for reasons of national security. If any world leaders took her at her word Palin’s dithering would have serious consequences.
- Posted by KevinWell, now we know who will carry the Bush-Speak mantle!
- Posted by PaulThe more Palin explains, the more it appears that her foreign policy credentials are wafer-thin.
If you don’t have it, just admit it and brush up your knowledge. Nobody is born to know everything. Show us how you managed to overcome deficiencies in the past. Much better tahn making excuses.

- Posted by jeflinBrodie, you are completely right: the President’s job is NOT about experience, it is about brains.
- Posted by Reasonable GuySay, Mr. Bush got tons of experience (including as the President), which did not prevent us from the hole that he has dug us into, and did not help get us out of that hole.
And Ms. Palin looks like having even less brains than him.
Alaska IS bordered buy Canada. Russia, at one point is 90 miles away from Alaska. Alaska DOES have trade negotiations with Russia. Russian spy planes DO fly ovee the state and Elemendorf AFB as well as Eilson AFB do sramble in f-16’s, etc to track them. So, most of you are clueless. It is sad, really. Think about BIden talking about the ‘29 Stock Market crash and stating that Roosevelt went on TV to discuss that with America.
You prefer him? Not me.
- Posted by ann laurenceI guess there are people in Alaska with even more foreign experience than Ms. Palin because they live much closer to Russia than her, and can see it much better.
- Posted by Reasonable GuyMaybe, she should invite them as foreign policy advisors to the White House?
How can anybody seriously be supporting these jokers even now on this blog. Complete defiance. I am a conservative, and am even in disbelief at how much blind faith people have in the Republican ticket. This lady needs to stay in Alaska where she will not be ruining anything important.
- Posted by JDAll this Palin-bashing reminds one of how Reagan was belittled for being an actor rather than some slick talking lawyer/professional-politicain of the type that today’s stupid voters think are the only ones qualified to be President.
Why is the newsmedium not “mocking” Obama for trying to project “foreign policy experience” by virtue of giving a speech in Germany?
The American people are going to see past this lopsided treatment and coverage.
There is no such thing as “foreign policy experience.” That the media talks as if there is, simply shows the degree to which liberalism has corrupted the English language.
We could legitimately speak of “negotiating experience”, because “negotiate” is a verb - something one DOES. On the other hand “policy” is a noun, and you don’t DO nouns. And in order to gain EXPERIENCE in something, you have to be able to DO that something. You cannot gain experience in anything that does not involve DOING something. One can have KNOWLEDGE of policy - historical knowledge, or knowledge of the current policies of a particular administration. But it makes no sense to talk about “policy experience”, foreign or otherwise.
As the brilliant black economist Thomas Sowell has pointed out, the only people who could acquire negotiating experience are the President and the Secretary of State. A senator or governor visiting foreign countries, or giving speeches in foreign countries, or meeting with the heads of foreign countries, does not give that person any negotiating experience whatsoever. He or she has no authority to negotiate. Politicians who take these kind of junkets at taxpayer expense, are doing so simply for show, trying to build up phoney foreign policy “experience” “credentials that will help to convince a dumbed down electorate that they are “seasoned” and thus “qualified” for more lucrative governmental positions.
- Posted by Richard BrodieThis woman is a blathering idiot. Is this the best the GOP can offer?
If we are stupid enough to elect Grandpa and Caribou Barbie, just imagine where we could end up in the next few years with this team. Yikes.
- Posted by RobI have never been so frightened in my life. I was actually leaning toward voting for McCain. However, it is clear that in this most important decision as a candidate, he made a terrible mistake. It seems it was totally political and completely unthought out. Govenor Palin is totally and utterly unprepared to be vice-president, let alone president of the United States. I will be voting for Obama.
- Posted by TexasAs someone who has watched what has developed on the political scene over the past 40 years, the majority of your comments have given me hope that this country is finally moving beyond the politics of fear and self interest to realize that the old ways can’t continue if we have any chance to provide a better place for all and not just the few. Keep it up folks, I’m proud of you. But remember, people who are scared resort to all sorts of crazy justifications. What they need is a little love and affection. They are not idiots (certainly they’re people that say idiotic things-don’t we all on occasion), but people we live with. Change the tone and change the world. Bless your hearts and keep up the search for truth. It’s out there to find. Perhaps we’re getting closer.

- Posted by JohnIncredible . My stomach hurts from laughing so hard ! If I were a Republican these days I sure would not admit it , I would be too embarrassed . She is in way way over her head . To think that she could possibly be VP of the United states is truly frightening especially when you consider McCain’s age and health and his dim bulb .
- Posted by John Koomsshe is a neophyte at playing the media game. But that’s a GOOD thing. Barack Obama is a dynamic speaker when he can prepare and read the speeches. In spontaneous reples to questions, he “hmmmms” and Ummmms alot to kill time to come up with a response and he does, but generally if you shake it down, he really doesn’t say anything. Sarah is new at this “shoveling”; she’s been working hard in her state and minding her OWN business and looking out for the people of her state which is what Obama was elected to do too but did he? Or did he make personal political “hay while the sun shines” for both he and his wife. Sarah is an American woman- she’s like the gal on the WWII poster with her sleeves rolled up saying “we can do it”. Obama hasn’t PROVEN that he can accomplish anything. Remember he has been part of the congress who did nothing to rein in Freddie and Fanny, in fact welcoming their growth as they donated millions to his coming campaign. He’s in debt big time to the big boys and guess who will pay them back? We will, God save America from socialism and Chicago corruption.
- Posted by dianneYou could put lipstick on pig, but it’s still a pig.
- Posted by YaccovYou could put Sarah Palin as Vice President
But she’s still Sarah Palin.
If Tweedle dee and Tweedle dum is elected,
I’m moving to Canada.
This scary Woman was just “Blessed” by a witch hunting minister (Really) that prayed over her to give her power to become Governor and to ward off any “Witchcraft”. I saw the real video…Now if this was Obama the video would be front page news. Time to take the gloves off and expose yet another CON-NEOCON.

“Walk the walk?” It’s bad enough that there are people who still think that “character” is enough to qualify for the highest positions in the country and ridicule expertise, education and knowledge. If you want romantic heroes who “live off the land” (while gunning down animals without need from a helicopter), than go to the movies. But now is not the time for the movies, it’s time for reality. The gut-thinkers and all those who believe that God sits and whispers in their bellies already had their chance. (And look what came out of that.) Now we need someone who is at least able to articulate a proper sentence, esp. when it comes to the business of politics and diplomacy.
