NEW YORK - No one could blame actress Tina Fey if she was privately hoping for a McCain-Palin victory in November.
The former “Saturday Night Live” star has been back on the show three times with her dead-on, ratings-stoking spoofs of Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin.
The latest skit on Palin’s debate with Democratic rival Sen. Joe Biden poked fun at the Alaska governor for dodging specifics by repeating the Republican ticket’s “maverick” theme.
“We’re gonna ask ourselves what would a maverick do in this situation, and then ya’ know, we’ll do that,” Fey-as-Palin responded when pressed on how to deal with the financial crisis.
SNL’s Palin dismissed climate change as “this climate change, hoozie-what’s-it” and said she wanted to talk about taxes instead: “We are not afraid to get mavericky in there.”
The sharpest barb came when she was asked about benefits for same-sex couples: “I believe marriage is meant to be a sacred institution between two unwilling teenagers,” Palin replied, in a clear reference to her pregnant, teen-aged daughter who is due to marry the child’s father.
The SNL skit also ridiculed Biden, picking on his friendship with Republican candidate John McCain.
“Look, I love John McCain. He is one of my dearest friends. But at the same time, he’s also dangerously unbalanced … He’s bad at his job, and mentally unstable. As my mother would say, God love him, but he’s a raging maniac — and a dear, dear friend.”
Biden, played by Jason Sudeikis, said at the end that his goal was to not be seen like a “condescending, egomaniacal bully. And I’m gonna’ be honest. I think I nailed it.”

Let’s get mavericky! A few whiny people logged in here just to diss SNL, I ask you, how mavericky is that? Tina Fey absolutely NAILS Palin, although I’m not sure she matched her nails. The Biden impression is good, but there’s only one woman in the world who’s a real maverick of a comedian, and you can drink to that. Thanks Tina! And a big Thank You to Ronald Reagan too!
- Posted by Studs McGonagleSo are we saying that America’s goal is to be six pack drink nation, which prides itself on mediocrity. The skit is dead on, pointing out why this nation is in such dire straights-the notion most of this nation feels if I can’t understand it, it must not be good. For the last eight years we had a plain spoke president, which had no idea about the complexities of the real world that surrounds this nation. I would hate to think that, “Real Americans” are so blind, that they can’t comprehend what type damage a person Palin could do to this country.
I am not saying she is not a good human being. But this nation needs a person with more gravitas at this point, not the female version of Joe Six Pack.
- Posted by slidesSNL stopped being funny in the late 70’s, and by early 80’s I had stopped watching it.
I am not watching it now, but the news has recently been talking about some “Nina Fay” person that is imitating Sarah Palin.
The skits described above aren’t funny !!! at all !!!
They are just political jabs at Republicans !!!
No attempt was made to parody Biden at all !!!!
They just dressed a guy up & gave him Bidens regular stump speech !!!
Now you know why so many millions of people stopped watching SNL.
Don’t worry though.
After McCain becomes President. I am sure that Sarah Palin will let her daughter and new son-in-law Levi Johnston come on SNL, and everyone will be happy again.
And soon thereafter, all of you will come down from the drug that you are on, and wonder what all the “OBAMA WORSHIPPING” was all about.
Which of course, is what we Republicans have been wondering all along.
- Posted by HolysmokesOh that wacky Sarah Palin! She’s as cute as a button, and as dumb as a sack of hammers. This entire election season was tailor-made for SNL, and I’m glad they’ve risen to the occasion.
- Posted by MMI haven’t watched SNL for years. I give them credit for being funny again. Palin is such an easy target due to her inexperience and her terrible answers to tough questions.
- Posted by McCainPalin becoming VP and potentially Pres if 72 year old cancer survivor John McCain should win the election is one of the scariest thoughts I can think of. Im not fooled by mavericky you betcha winks. Its so sad that politics has come to this in what is supposed to be the greatest country in the world. Even a McCain staffer admiited that Palin was chosen for ‘political’ reasons - for her ability to ‘connect with average Americans’ and not for her experience or qualifications. There are so many qualified talented experienced GOPers out there - and this is the best? It really lowered my opinion of John McCain and helped me decide to vote for OBAMA because McCain is telling us that years of experience dont matter. If Palin can make fun of Biden giving speeches while she was in second grade, what does she think mccain was doing? Being Mavericky with his 30 years in DC?
- Posted by MattLet’s not forget the most overlooked reason to fear a Palin/McCain presidency:
SHE’S A CREATIONIST.
People, she thinks Adam & Eve rode a dinosaur to church 5000 years ago. That, to me, disqualifies her for the office and makes her a laughingstock.
- Posted by joey bigtimeIn 2000 America voted for George Bush. Now the Law of Karma demands that you suffer tenfold for your foolishness, which is only just. The Law of Karma now requires that Sarah Palin become your president.
It’s sad, yes. But funny too. Those of us who live outside your borders can only laugh.
- Posted by MattSNL has their finger on the pulse of US politics.
I wish they’d do a skit on Paulson hiring his Wall Street friends as contractors at the Treasury. The guys who got us into this fine financial mess are now getting paid tax-payer dollars to get us out of this mess. Now that deserves an SNL skit!!! … maybe Tina can play Paulson.
- Posted by CathyPalin is a parrot for the Republican party. Yes she decreased property tax in her town but increased sales tax that she forgot to mention. I think she is shallow.
- Posted by STEVEVice President hopeful Sarah Palin, Ms. Swift Boater.
- Posted by Pete McDanielWhy would anyone want to vote for a Republican for president and especially one with Palin as VP? They keep saying we should shrink government spending, but they’ve done the complete opposite. We’re going to be spending $700 Billion to bail out WALLSTREET millionares. Guess who’s going to be paying for that ? YOU and I. The Republicans have caused this “Economic Pearl Harbor” and now they want us to vote for them again. The Republicans have left this country in a complete MESS - a huge budget deficit, we’re about to enter a major recession, price of oil is sky high, inflation is starting to pick up, etc…..
- Posted by Rich WatsonThanks Palin for providing SNL with ample material to work with by making a spectacle of yourself everyday.
- Posted by OCI personally feel insulted as a woman and embarrassed as an American to have to witness your participation in the presidential race.
Tim says
“SNL stopped being funny when Chris Farley died. They are clearly in the tank for Obama. It’s funny that they actually still think they are relevant. Outside of the elitist snob cliche, they do not relate with real Americans.”
and Captain Obvious says:
“meh, SNL always fails when doing politics… they only prove how out of touch their characatures are with reality. they should stick to skewering brittney spears… because the last time they were popular also happened to be the last time SNL was funny”
and I say:
You guys need to grow a sense of humor, just like Larry Rogge in his comment:
“I’m a flaming republican…..but funny is funny. Tina is a genious comic and has breathed new life into snl.”
You are so right, Larry. To Tim & Captain: If you can’t see that Sarah Palin is TRULY a joke, and John McCain is rapidly becoming one, then you have totally lost your sense of what is funny. Save your comments, and send them to Karl Rove… he might appreciate them. Try to learn to appreciate the good things that will be happening in the next 4 to 8 years. It will be good for the middle class, and that translates to good for the country.
- Posted by Really informedThe Biden/Palin SNL skit was hillarious! Unfortunately the rest of the show sucked.
- Posted by unaffiliatedAlright, I am a huge feminist and life long democrat. I will admit it upfront. I also have to admit that when Palin was announced, I did take a step back to consider her as a viable candidate. After watching her meltdowns in uncanned situations, the heavy handling by her own party, AND the calls for her to step down from noted Republican leaders, I am hugely disappointed that she is a VP candidate. Her failure will again give naysayers to women in leadership more ammunition against future women running for office. Her folksy responses and avoidance of real answers made her seem dumb. Why didn’t she answer most of the questions? Her camp did not have the questions before hand so she had strict marching orders to stay on the talking points. She did that, but failed to answer some key questions. Biden clearly listened to the questions, understood them, and responded. Not being able to answer a question about her own achilles heel… how cocky??? After later learning that academic credentials are limited to a B.A. in journalism…it all made sense. For the republican party to pat themselves on the back because she did not implode on national television is an outrage. Since when have we lowered our standards that much? A shout out in the middle of a vice-presidential debate, please!!! I ask the American public this question… who would you have represent you in high profile diplomatic meetings Palin or Biden? All of her smarmy hockey mom schtick is false. She and her husband have made over six figures for years. To say she is in touch with the middle class is a joke.
As a side note, why doesn’t anyone ask why she has her baby at the debate that ended well past his bed time??? After Palin was done holding her young baby Trig (who has special needs,) she handed him off to her next youngest (I think she is sround
who had no idea how to hold him and left his head bobbing around??? I am a huge proponent of women in leadership, but we skewer the Spears family for such gaffes (pregnant teenage daughter, slipping while holding her baby..,) but why not Palin?? As a mother of two children, I travel frequently so I too know the stress of juggling work and family. Watching Palin pass her little son off and not pay attention to this, clearly showed her lack of attention to detail on things that matter. Her ambition for power (comment regarding expanding VP role in Senate…hello America…we see Russia from Alaska???) is evident. Make no mistake America, Palin would make it to the presidency is you vote for the McCain/Palin ticket. Wake Up America! Obama / Biden 2008.

- Posted by Studs McGonagleSNL is just a show, Palin is supposed to be “real”. I never thought I would hear a nominee for president of a major party on Meet The Press start the list of his vice prsident’s qualifications with being a member of the PTA. That shows the depth of Palin’s experience.
Later McCain also told the media that America does not want a president with a “Harvard law degree or a degree from an Ivy League school”. The Republican Party now runs on its own incompetence with candidates that match their “Joe Six-Pack” platform.
- Posted by KramerByron Alexander… Yours is the absolute best post I’ve seen since this entire horror show started . When you talk about the majority of pepple wanting to be able to look up life’s decisions in a “rule book” you are talking about fear of being on one’s own. How did we get to the point where as a species we lack the confidence to face the world with confidence? I don’t know, but I bet it has something to do with the unapproachable, petty, churlish, child-eating god most of the world worships. A father figure like that could suck the curiosity and courage out of anyone.
The world is gray people! There’s no avoiding moral responsibility by looking it up in a book. Stop. Pay attention. And vote for Obama.
- Posted by JbabzugSNL is funny, end of story there. We all need to laugh a little in light of the seriousness of the times we are in and SNL gives us that chance. BUT I am so disheartened by the turn the campaign is taking. Of course since I support Obama I run the risk of being bias here. Why can’t McCain/Palin stick to berating the policies that he truly believe define the difference between him and Obama. Why do they have to make it personal. I think it is clear to most that IF Obama would go personal he could wipe the floor with the two of them. Keating Five, adultery in his first marriage, (how many other affairs were there?) Palin’s own pastor troubles, a mother who is too busy with work and having babies herself to notice her daughter is having unprotected sex. Seems they live in glass houses and they are relying on the fact that Obama has and I hope will stay above the gutter politics the Repubs have no shame in wallowing in. How does she think this is going to play out with her children when they see her example of attacking a man personally just to win. Those aren’t family values to me. Todd, go home and take care of your kids, their mother obviously doesn’t care enough to. I think you need to be in Alaska to testify in some investigation anyway, don’t you?
