SNL spoofs Palin vs Biden debate

NEW YORK - No one could blame actress Tina Fey if she was privately hoping for a McCain-Palin victory in November.

The former “Saturday Night Live” star has been back on the show three times with her dead-on, ratings-stoking spoofs of Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin.

The latest skit on Palin’s debate with Democratic rival Sen. Joe Biden poked fun at the Alaska governor for dodging specifics by repeating the Republican ticket’s “maverick” theme.

“We’re gonna ask ourselves what would a maverick do in this situation, and then ya’ know, we’ll do that,” Fey-as-Palin responded when pressed on how to deal with the financial crisis.

SNL’s Palin dismissed climate change as “this climate change, hoozie-what’s-it” and said she wanted to talk about taxes instead: “We are not afraid to get mavericky in there.”

The sharpest barb came when she was asked about benefits for same-sex couples: “I believe marriage is meant to be a sacred institution between two unwilling teenagers,” Palin replied, in a clear reference to her pregnant, teen-aged daughter who is due to marry the child’s father.

The SNL skit also ridiculed Biden, picking on his friendship with Republican candidate John McCain.

“Look, I love John McCain. He is one of my dearest friends. But at the same time, he’s also dangerously unbalanced … He’s bad at his job, and mentally unstable. As my mother would say, God love him, but he’s a raging maniac — and a dear, dear friend.”

Biden, played by Jason Sudeikis, said at the end that his goal was to not be seen like a “condescending, egomaniacal bully. And I’m gonna’ be honest. I think I nailed it.”

“Try being a woman in your 30’s and running for Mayor in a town in the second largest state in the union, winning, and serving well, while at the same time raising a family of four”…joe, do you realize that Alaska has about 700,000 residents, and that Wasilla had less than 9,000 when Palin was Mayor? And you probably didn’t realize that she hired a city manager to do all the real work, except for the hiring of her friends and the firing of her enemies. And does it not bother you at all that the McCain team, which she is an integral part of, is now refusing to participate in an investigation that she previously encouraged? If they are so confident in her innocence, what are they trying to hide? So much for transparency in government.

The scariest thing about your comment is that it illustrates the fact that many Americans, (out of ignorance, laziness, lack of interest or blind faith in their party) will base their vote on SOUND BITES. So many before us have fought for our right to vote; we should take the responsibility very seriously and base it on research and facts. If you don’t have time to dig deeper than the quickie propoganda put out by EITHER party, you are voting as a pawn. How’s THAT feel?

Why is there so much seething hatred of Sarah from liberal posters here? If you take an honest open-minded look at this imperfect woman you will see a decent person, who while perhaps not having the highest credentials possible, does have credentials. When asked about Palin’s qualifications, the president of Pakistan stated “She is not the governor of nothing”. Does this mean you should agree with her politically or support her in any way? Of course not. However, it seems to me that this type of autonomic and categorical hatred signifies something else. Maybe the real problem is not Sarah. Maybe the real problem is your own insecurity. Something inside you self-absorbed liberals feels very threatened by this young woman from Alaska. Does she unsettle your self-important, moral equivalent, hyper-righteous, godless view of the world? That she should upset you so much, should be a warning sign. Step back. Take a deep breath. Get a clue.

At the end of the day, we have to realize that both parties will do and say and select their running mates according to what the polls and consultants tell them will garner the most votes. In that regard, she was a brilliant selection. My hope is that no matter who is elected president (and VP), all Americans will have the decency, intelligence, and patriotism to show the proper respect that the position deserves. Say it with your informed vote, not with ignorant public comments and bitter, disrespectful bumper stickers. Let’s show the world the kind of integrity and courage this great country was founded on.

Haha… Tina Fey is hysterical. She is 3 for 3! Sarah Palin is a dunce. For some of you posting here that she is a “very intelligent woman…” (Lu?!?) or that she “was actually pretty darn good” (Chris!?!), we know you can’t be that dumb. Give yourself some more credit.
May be you think that somehow you will influence public opinion with (counter-to-fact) comments on a blog post?
You won’t. You can’t fix stupid. You can’t fix public perception of stupid… You can’t stop people from watching these clips on the Interet, from laughing and forwarding them to each other. If Palin wasn’t so dumb, these parodies wouldn’t be so popular and funny….

This skit was hilarious and the sad truth is that Palin was essentially giving these kinds of answers. John McCain should be ashamed of himself for picking this unqualified woman.

Bravo, SNL, for more comic relief from the real-life political soap opera featuring John McCain and Sarah Palin. As their poll numbers slip and they become more desperate, McCain/Palin will pull every dirty trick in the book to smear Obama’s character and paint him as far too risky and dangerous to lead our country. The simple truth is that it hard to imagine that any pair could prove more disastrous to the United States than Bush/Cheney, but we’re looking at it when we see McCain/Palin. I hope and pray that my fellow Americans will put country first and vote for Barack Obama and Joe Biden. They are exactly the team we need in the White House at this calamitous time in our nation’s history.

Bravo Tina, showing the truth about Palin. I believe her to be the true Sarah Palin not that winking air-head who recited memorized sentences well. She is “A disaster in the making” and I don’t honestly know why people are buying it. This is not a scandalous story in National Inquirer,we are talking a world leader for God’s Sake.
Lets keep this “doghunit joe sixpack maverick” and her “first dude” as far away from the White House as possible, just keep them “up there” in Alaska. Is John McCain thinking of this country at all? or this is just winning this presidency at any cost?

Palin is either a quick study or a very intelligent woman. She came across sharp, clear, and kind in the debates. In return, Biden was nasty with his snickers, following up props from Palin with another series of searing insults from the Obama panel of “experts” who prepared him his lines. Meanwhile, Palin met with significant US and world leaders of today and recent past, before the debate, and hence she learned more in a few weeks (and that great things are possible) than Obama/Biden will ever know.

Obama is opportunistic to the very max, and establishment all the way (whatever the prevailing group around him is) that way maybe he doesnt have to think for himself.

The worst sexism is coming from a lot of women in media, who have sold their souls.

I liked the Mike Mansfield quote, however, something like: “Dont question motives but rather judgment, for you can never know all the motives that move a person to a particular action.”

As an atheist it is difficult for me to say this: god help your country and the world if another republican government is elected.

“Due to the historically low expectations for Gov. Palin, were she simply to do an adequate job tonight, at no point cry, faint, run out of the building or vomit, you should consider the debate a tie.” Queen Latifah as “Gwen Ifill” in SNL tells the audience.======>

This is an incorrect sterotype of women I resent. Never ever did Gov Palin once act like this. In fact, the reverse– as a newcomer on the scene– she took on touch pundits by hand and foot!!! Brave, strong and full of integrity!!

How can Fey and Poehler do this to their own gender and perpetuate the bad steretypes is beyond reason; that too.. just for a little silly laugh.

I’m not a Palin supporter.. but even her critics must agree (which Hillary did!):
Gov Palin did an EXCELLENT job in the VP- far better than most would if they had 5 weeks on the scene– that includes Biden, McCain, and even Hillary… folks.

SNL better hope Palin gets in or they’ll be back to the same lame sophmoric attempts at humor of recent years.

David- I wish I didn’t have to read all the other posts to get to yours. Your dead on. History will repeat itself and our children will bear the real real pain

Palin did a very good job? Give me a break, gosh darn it!
If your criteria for “doing a good job” is cutesy little winks and overly rehearsed sound bytes that are basically lies — well ok.

Let’s face the facts–Palin is even more out of touch than George Bush….it’s amazing how low Republicans will stoop just to pander to women…and, to get the phony sex appeal of a so-called maverick! LOL. SNL really nailed her last night!!!

If you can win an election by being cheerful all the time, give Palin some pom poms to increase the effect!

Don’t americans see and distrust such fakeness? Or do they honestly think their local restaurant waitress genuinly cares about you when she asks cheerfully “how are y’all doing today?”.

insecurity reigns supreme with this never-ending arm chair criticism of public officials. i just read the comment posted above this one about “Sarah Palin’s ego and how she has ‘no depth…’” try being a woman in your 30’s and running for Mayor in a town in the second largest state in the union, winning, and serving well, while at the same time raising a family of four- then, do it all over again by running for Governor in your early 40’s in the same state and winning- and if that’s not enough, she then gets the nod for VP pick. a person with “no depth?” what do you do for a living stan stuart? have you served your country and your family unselfishly for your entire life? have some respect for things accomplished by those who work hard and make something of themselves. when a person hacks on another who is more accomplished than themselves it is simply rooted in anger and insecurity - whether it’s on the right or the left, find your self esteem people! if you want to hack on on someone, hack on Henry Paulsen and his henchmen.

What’s so amazing about the skits from SNL is that they don’t have to do anything to be funny. Sarah Palin provides all the lines and they just act them out. I’m sure if you the audience could’ve laughed during the actual debate, they would’ve. Honestly, can anyone see this woman meeting with world leaders using all of her hockey mom terms. It’s like that AMX commercial where the guy pulls out his super hero credit card to pay for the meal and the Germans laugt at him. This woman is a joke and the McCain/ Palin ticket is a joke. McCain pulled this one out of his bag of tricks.

God forbid anything should happen to the ol fella (McCain), this woman would be the president! She thinks she has foreign relations experience because of her proximty to Russia! Heaven help us. Do the right thing for the country people. We’re already footing the bill for the bailout mess the Reps got us in with all their deregulating. Obama/ Biden Nov 4.

Thank you SnowracerXgirl (Posted: October 5th, 2008
8:14 am GMT) for raising the issue oo the neglect of the baby. I too wondered what mom would have a little one up so late - amoungst the roaring applause of hopeless republicans - the baby seems to have a bottle of benadryl prior to each expo, never crying or needing anythuing, he’s just there, in his PJ’s, (they make clothes for little guys) I’m writing this in such a manner is to which the great governor of Alaska, Sarah Palin, may understand - Tina Fey should do a skit demostaring Palin’s mothering skills. She does not have the mothering eye that I can smile pretty for the camera and keep an eye on the kids…and doesn’t her daghter look a lot like her dad? Such I say to thee…MAVERICK!

The beginning of socialism in America is nearing. Many American’s have given up and are ready for their government to take care of them. I live in a house, drive cars and furnish my kids stuff I can’t afford. I am sinking in credit card debt. I need Obama to come in and right the situation. It is my by god American right to live above my means and teach my children such. To fund their “middle and lower income” tax cuts and health care rights , the Democrats are about to hand it to business and the people who invest. The economy will respond accordingly…why would it not? The Roman empire ruled the world until they got fat and complacent. The empire is about to fall again. Our kids have the work ethic of a corpse. They want to be taken care of like their liberal parents. America the entitled!

Johnny - I’ve got it in big red letters. Don’t you fret your cute little sunburnt self! Now I’m just gonna stick it right over the button here. Doggunit, the tapes not sticking very well. Uh Johnny, can you come help - put your finger here, just hold this end down while I smooth the tape. Golly it’s just not sticking… Daggunit!

It is nearly inconceivable to believe after living the past 8 years of this Bush/Cheney made nightmare that any sane person with a heartbeat in this country would consider a McCain/Palin presidency. Many in the above blog’s dialog have done a tremendous job explicitly defining the continued perils this great nation will suffer if McCain/Palin were to be voted into office. We, the rational thinkers of this wonderful country have found inspiration and hope in a man that has the power to unite us all as one, to work our way out of the catastrophy the Republicans have orchestrated. We must all stand up today and proactively speak out for Obama and continue to speak like never before, so loud that our calls for a return to all that is good about this country can NO LONGER be quelched. Too often amoung are own friends, it’s stated: “Let’s not talk politics….” We must all find the courage to rise above the unconfortablness and aid those that need it more clearly defind. Inspire and Be Inspired so that this country will be redelived to the Good and the Just!!!!!

I am glad to see that somebody else (SnowracerXgirl) noticed the same things I did about bringing the Palin family up to the stage after the debate. I was surprised to see the handoff and lack of concern about Mrs Palin’s baby as the one of the younger daughters (was it Piper who is 7 yrs old?) struggled to keep her balance and not drop the child. I am all for mothers working and believe they can do any job they set their minds to, but they do have a commitment to the children that they have brought into this world. To me, she has not shown any warmth or much concern about how her kids are doing as she and ‘First Dude’ travel all over the place. Sorry supporters, I just have a bad feeling about Mrs Palin, and I have learned over the years to trust my instincts.
