Akhtar Soomro was born in 1965 in the Lyari neighborhood of Karachi, Pakistan. In 1986 he graduated from the Government College of Science and Technology with a degree in engineering and the intention to work with SUPARCO, the national space agency of Pakistan. In 1993 Soomro’s attention moved towards photography and he started working for a studio covering fashion, industrial and interior design. In 1998 Soomro started working for an advertising agency when he discovered he wanted to be a photojournalist. He has since shot assignments for local and international newspapers, magazines and stock agencies around the world. In 2009, Soomro was part of a New York Times' team that won a Pulitzer for ‘International Reporting’ from Pakistan and Afghanistan. In the same year, Soomro began working extensively for Reuters and covered the internally displaced from a military offensive in Pakistan's Swat Valley. He has since photographed top news stories across Pakistan for Reuters, including the 2010 floods. He currently resides in Karachi with his wife, daughter and two sons. 30 PHOTOS
