Lenovo sets expectations for tablet market

LAS VEGAS, Jan 7 (Reuters) – Lenovo Group Ltd (0992.HK: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz),
which is making a concerted push into tablets, said it expects
the devices to see good growth but still eventually only make
up a fraction of the broader personal computer market.

Rory Read, chief operating officer for Lenovo, predicted
that tablets will settle in at 10 percent to 15 percent of the
overall PC market.

A sea of tablets, no iPad-killer

ARM says Microsoft needs it for mobile

LAS VEGAS (Reuters) – Microsoft’s plan to make Windows compatible with ARM Holdings chip designs will help the software giant establish a major presence in smartphones and tablets, ARM’s president said.

Microsoft has been slow to make a splash in the mobile market, dominated by Apple, Google and Research In Motion, but it’s not too late, Tudor Brown told Reuters in an interview.

Dell unveils 4G tablet for T-Mobile’s network

new 7-inch touchscreen tablet that will run on T-Mobile’s
high-speed 4G network as the PC maker expands its aggressive
move into the mobile market.

The Streak, which runs on Google’s (GOOG.O: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz) Android
software, sports a dual-core Nvidia (NVDA.O: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz) Tegra 2 processor
and support for Adobe’s (ADBE.O: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz) Flash multimedia software.

Apple launches app store for Macs, a la iPhone

LAS VEGAS, Jan 6 (Reuters) – Apple Inc (AAPL.O: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz) is
launching an applications store for Mac computers, replicating
a model that proved wildly popular on its iPhones.

Apple is hoping to capitalize on Macs’ surging sales as it
aims to change the way software is sold for its computers –
centralizing distribution, simplifying discovery and leaving
Apple as a gatekeeper of sorts.

RIM’s PlayBook looks smooth in first demo

Ever since its announcement last fall, gadget geeks have been itching to take Research in Motion’s new tablet for a test drive. Tech reporters finally got some hands-on time with the device — the PlayBook — on Wednesday at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. Amid a crush of iPad wannabes, RIM’s tablet proved to be a pleasant surprise.

Some companies used CES to show off less-than-fully-baked tablets, with vendors such as Motorola saying the software was not fully ready. The PlayBook (while also still a work in progress; the real deal will launch in February or March) was noticeably zippy (it sports a speedy dual-core chip). It also has an attractive, intuitive user interface, and played Flash-based videos from the Web at a snap.

Nvidia challenges Intel with PC central processors

LAS VEGAS (Reuters) – Graphics chip designer Nvidia Corp said it will begin designing central processors for personal computers, pushing back against growing pressure from Intel Corp.

Nvidia shares rose 7.7 percent after the announcement and closed at $16.98 on the Nasdaq.
