Ambiguous headline?

Court frees U.S. teen jailed 10 years for oral sex

This headline is misleading. This person received a 10 year sentence, but was “jailed” only 2 years. I would not expect such an error from Reuters. P.N.

Several readers objected to our headline. To American readers it was ambiguous, although in other parts of the world, “jailed” is more synonymous with actual sentencing. I think we could have avoided the confusion with something like one of these:

U.S. teen freed after two years in jail for oral sex

U.S. teen, sentenced to 10 years for oral sex, is freed
