Grey’s Anatomy” actress Katherine Heigl marries

heigl-160.jpgHeigl won an Emmy in September for her role as an adulterous medic in the ABC network’s “Grey’s Anatomy,” which follows the lives and loves of physicians at a Seattle hospital.

This is an error. Only a married person can commit adultery. Heigl’s character was not married.

I think our reference was fine. Individual state laws and religious definitions vary widely on this question, and it is by no means as simple as saying only a married person can commit adultery.  Just one example offered by our  religion editor, Tom Heneghan, from the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops Website:

IV. Offenses Against the Dignity of Marriage

Adultery refers to marital infidelity. When two partners, of whom at least one is married to another party, have sexual relations-even transient ones-they commit adultery.

There may be a distinction between the Catholic Church’s view as expressed above and the legal position.

My understanding is that if an unmarried person engages in sexual intercourse with a married person, the former has committed fornication, while the latter has committed adultery.

I write this, though, from memory alone.
