Australia WW2 warship found, ends 66-year mystery
A day after searchers located the wreck of the German merchant raider HSK Kormoran off the West Australian coast, Prime Minister Kevin Rudd said they had also found the Australian battlecruiser HMAS Sydney, sunk by the German ship.
For a second time I have read in a Reuters piece a rather silly error about the HMAS Sydney II, the sunken Austrailan WWII cruiser. You call the ship a battlecruiser, which it surely was not. The HMAS Sydney II was a light cruiser.Alan

Ah, I love corrections based on specialized knowledge.
- Posted by DanThe word “the” should not be used before the designation “HMAS” (which stands for His Majesty’s Australian Ship”).
Thus it would be “the His Majesty’s Australian Ship Sydney” which is, of course, silly.
So: either “HMAS Sydney” or “the Sydney”.
Sorry for the lesson.
