Blanchard and Hornby’s article on the navy parade at Qingdao heads off with with the words “China will show off its resurgent naval strength”. There is not really a basis for such strong words in the article, nor is the statement that China has become “increasingly more vocal about its hopes to become a deep-water power” documented.
A quick comparison to just one of the many navies round China, namely the Japanese one, would help to put into proportion the naval modernization China is carrying out. Here the words “resurgent naval strength” and “hopes to become a deep water power”, and even “disquieting” would be rather more apt.
