Wrong death rate

Blood test may detect lung cancer in early stages

The two-year survival rate is only about 15 percent mainly because the disease, which kills 1.3 people globally a year, is often diagnosed in advanced stages.

You say 1.3 people die from lung cancer each year. I suspect the number is much higher (maybe 1.3 “million”?).

Light years

Baby supernova seen right in our neighborhood

The supernova, known as G1.9+0.3, would have made a bright flash when it first exploded 140 years ago but was not seensupernova-180.jpg because dust obscures it, David Green of Britain’s University of Cambridge and colleagues reported.

The supernova is at the center of the galaxy, roughly 25,000 light-years from Earth. A light-year is the distance light travels in one year — about 5.8 trillion miles.

Caustic comments…

Oxford Street victim faced rape charges

LONDON (Reuters) – The man who was stabbed to death in Oxford Street this week was facing charges of raping a 16-year-old girl and pouring acid over her afterwards to hide the crime, it was revealed on Wednesday.

He faced a further charge of causing grievous bodily harm by pouring caustic soda on the victim. Media reports said the chemical was used in an attempt to destroy evidence and caused the 16-year-old severe burns.
