Should Rahul Gandhi join the cabinet?

May 20, 2009

Prime Minister-elect Manmohan Singh has said he will try and persuade Rahul Gandhi, heir apparent to the Congress party, to take on a cabinet position in the new government.

Rahul Gandhi

Gandhi, whose father, grandmother and great grandfather were all prime ministers, had become the most visible campaigner of Congress in the month-long election to win over Indian youth as well as millions of poor villagers.

Critics say the political freshman is too young to deal with complex problems like Pakistan, and that as a member of an elite family he was disconnected from much of India.

But local reports suggest the 38-year-old bachelor may be offered the plum position of Information and Broadcasting Minister.

Should Rahul Gandhi join the cabinet? If yes, which portfolio would suit him best.

HE IS THE ONLY HONEST POLITICIAN WHO DARED TO SPEAK TRUTH
REGARDING VARIOUS ISSUES SUCH AS SYCOPHANCY, DEMOCRACY WITH IN PARTY’S FOLD.
HE IS A GENTLEMAN.
HE TRAVELLED THOUSANDS KMS DURING ELECTION CAMPAIGN WHICH MUST HAVE GIVEN HIM EXPOSURE TO THE GROUND REALITIES & HARDSHIP FACED BY LAYMAN.
DIFFICULTIES OF INFRASTRUCTURE IN TOWNS & VILLAGES,
PAUCITY OF MEDICAL HEALTH SYSTEM OR TOTAL FAILURE OF
HEATH SYSTEM.
THESE ISSUES COULD BE ADDRESSED ONLY & ONLY IF A CANDID
POLITICIAN LIKE RAHUL GANDI TAKE THE RESPONSIBILITY
OF ADDRESSING THESE VERY COMPLEX ISSUES.
HE SHOULD JOIN MAIN STREM OF INDIAN POLITICAL SYSTEM .
WE HAVE FAITH IN HIM & HIS WORDS.

The whole idea seems to be like asking “Should one eat the packet along with the biscuit?”.
Rahul can pull in votes and he should continue doing it till the Congress can stay on its own leg. In the process, he will be in touch with realities and learn immensely. He has time in his favour and oppurtunities galore. For the time being let him continue what he is doing and leave the cabinet to the more experienced and deserving.
I am just wondering why the heck all junior netas are some heavyweights son or daughter. Take Sachin, Jitin, Milind, Kanimozhi, Varun …Are our political parties so impermeable for the young leadership. If a party is really interested in moulding youngsters, then it should go for real talent scan-something than Rahul has been attempting. That is why I feel Rahul should continue what he is doing

yes 110% Rahul Ghandhi should join the cabinet bcoz after joining the cabinet he has more efficiency and more confidance to lead the country….

Rahul Gandhi, no matter how inexperienced he appears, no matter how “Gandhi” has positioned him in a very unique position in his political career, has the drive and will to put a cleaner image of politics before today’s youth.
He has the charm to pull mass, specially youth, and relate to common issues for people. The is part of the right institution that will serve good for this political career over the long run.
He gives confidence by denying support for corrupt leader, raises his concerns about it, regardless of party views. He should stay put to the learning curve and will make a leader country will proud to have.

Where wise ponder to tread, the fools jump in. Politics in the most diverse India of 1.2 billion multi-party democracy is not a child’s play. Rahul knows it well. He is well educated, clean, and competent freshman pondering over the situation. He would like to learn about this vast country, its people, and their problems. His approach is proper: Learn about the country, and organize the Congress party from grassroots level up composed of young Indians who will carry this rapidly developing world’s largest democracy. Give him more time to get ready; and let him decide to join for whichever cabinet important portofolio for which he feels competent competent. Congress does have a great future with Rahul, but he needs more apprenticeship to gain full confidence. He has an intelligent mother, and Dr. Manmohan, who act as his political guardians. Before he marries into muddy Indian politics, let him decide on his own. He can be the bright future of India, like his ancestors including Moti Lal, Jawahar Lal, Indira Gandhi, and Rajiv were India’s past. India Today looks to Rahul for the future, like India in 1947 looked to his great grandpa, Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru. I would tell only one thing, “All Olympic Gold Medalist Swimmers, had to jump in the water to learn to swim; similarly, he has to jump into muddy Indian politics to the learn the practical realities, and become expert at it.

He is a real leader, he should join mainstream of Indian politics.

He is our future PM and I would like to see him do more of what he has been doing which is reaching out to poor and middle average people by visinting to small towns and villages. Going around and seeing what is a life of poor is more important than being a member of cabinet. This is like getting hand-on training. In my openion hands-on trinaing is much better than reading a book and trying to understand how thing works. By making him a member of cabinet may not allow him to travel as much as he can do without being a cabinet member. One day he is going to be a great PM. Jai hind.

well, destiny has choosen him for this country. we can not overlook the same. yes he is too immature for the problems to deal with pakistan and terrerisum. so information and broad casting ministry will definatly suit to his personality.

I feel any average Joe can do what Rahul Gandhi has done so far. I would like to see him prove his worth first before he accepts tougher posts !

No, he shouldn’t. Everybody knows in today’s India he can be anything he wants to be. But this is a great ooppurtunity for him to be magnanimous, and show everybody that he can talk the talk and walk the walk. Also, it would be a tribute to MAHATMA GANDHI who shares a last name with him. For the sake of a healthy democracy we need to put an end to the dynasty trend in Congress Party.

If he is a real man he should bring back the Swiss money that is in the Nehru family accounts, take action against all corrupt politicians (including those from Congress), and relinquish the PM post forever (like him Mom) to end the Nehru dynasty in politics. This is the only way he and his dynasty can re-pay to the country !

After all the insecurities of local regional parties, the people of India decided to vote for only one single largest party so that the country can move forward in the direction of growth by challenging the largest world economies. This also meant showing a new direction to the world by India taking a lead as a front runner.

The earlier ruling party has made no mistake in governing the country to the best of its ability, the only hitches being provided by the regional parties supporting it.

In RAHUL GANDHI, the country, urban and rural saw a new INDIA, probably the continuation of Late Mr. Rajiv Gandhi
who had taken India to new heights just by his first move of introducing the computer revolution.

The same charisma, the same vitality, the same integrity and last but not the least the same honesty to take INDIA to the forward path of growth through strong leadership, vision and clarity.

If earlier Rajiv Gandhi can become PM at 42 and now Barack OBama can become President of USA at 48, then how about RAhul Gandhi to atleast join the cabinet and show a new path to the OLD, Stick carrying leaders, who cannot even take themselves forward, forget the country.

Rahulji should not join the Cabinet. He is more than a Cabinet Minister – an unofficial Prime Minister. He should
look after Party matters. He should try to bring some decipline, courtesy and dedication in the party workers.
After Rahul now Laluprasadji, Supriyaji Sule have started saying that they don’t wanted to be Ministers, this number will surely increase in the states of north of Karnataka, but Tamilnadu will be a problem for Dr. Manmohansingh and
UPA chairperson Soniaji.

Is this a really question bothering?. Who cares, whether he is in govt or outside. He is also a MP just like others. Given an opportunity to other MP;s with full support of a national party with no opposition for whatever he speaks, any MP can prove himself. No one is bothered abt his position or his works. If he wants to do service, he can do being a common man or an Indian citizen. Why there is so much imoprtance to this person?. especially media. There are thousands of Rahul in India.

As a passive observer, helpless and ordinary citizen of India, I find Rahul Gandhi to be the best promise for a nation on the path of progress. He may be young, inexperienced, from Gandhi family and son of an ‘Italian’ mother all of which are offered as negative aspects by some but in my view these very attributes make him the ideal leader India needs over the next 10 years to emerge as a global leader. India has been a melting pot of cultures over thousands of years and it sounds absurd to make it a closed (Hindu) society.

Whether he should be in the cabinet? Heck yes. The best and only way to change the system is by being in the system. He has shown the ability to work at grass roots and lead from the front. He has shown that he has clear, original ideas and is not afraid to speak his mind. At the same time, he is wise enough to keep away from contradictory and wasteful activities like his cousin Varun.

Rahul should look at US president Barack Obama and go for it. Nothing should hold him back.

Yes, he has done his homework. He should join the cabinet now. He doesnt have a regional agenda. India voted down all the elements those wanted a “divide and rule” with region and religious agenda. Seems like Rahul has a vision for India\’s future. The way he led the congress to victory in UP makes him a good leader. India need more leaders who have professionalism

I feel Rahul is too young to be in the cabinet. I feel he should have some more experience with Indian people, culture, background, understanding, etc. before taking up such a post.

If Rahul Gandhi was another person from the crowd, he wouldnot have been here. We need to consider this. There are many more in this country who are much more capable and highly knowledgable who have to be given a chance.

…“the 38-year-old bachelor”…mother will not let him marry, and no women will marry him because of his mothers influence over him. You expect someone like that to lead a nation?

Unfortunately he has very little skill. The product is not very good, but the brand management has been handled extremely well.

I am a great fan of Congress and Great admirer of Gandian legacy of sacrifice. That family has excelled through selfless sacrifice, so how can anybody expect that Rahul will go after post. He has a steely resolve for what he believes in. I hope he will go the extra mile to (what his enigmatic father could not unfortunately achieved). What is there in cabinet, the real challenge is in ground. In the process hopefully he will show a new path of nation building to the otherwise indifferent youth. That’s what India needs; think what India can achieve with a mass of population who does not go to vote, who takes part in riot for no reason, who only blames, who does not know what is India.

rahul is not a politician, but he is above the politician. rahul factor works so INC able to got majoriy after around two decade. rahul must not join cabinet. he must attach with PM dr. manmohan singh and mustlook after all issues. if he join cabinet he become only a minister, but he is above all of this.

The real question to ask here is as to in which role would Rahul Gandhi is more needed today both with respect to the Congress party and the country in general. The answer to that question is that Rahul Gandhi has a greater role to play outside the Cabinet than being part of it. By being part of the Cabinet he would be forced to devote more of his time and energy within the narrow confines of that ministry apart from giving some inputs in the Cabinet meetings etc. Indeed this is an important role. But consider the role outside it. By virtue of his surname, his clear intention to make a difference and bring about a changes, his demonstrated actions over the last two years and the electoral mandate which has vindicated his approach to a great extent, Rahul Gandhi is uniquely positioned to continue with greater fervor his attempts to bring in more democratisation in the country’s oldest and popular political party and in a larger context inspire the youth of this nation to take more active interest in politics. While there may be a lot of equally competent people to fill in the role of a Cabinet minister, Rahul is uniquely positioned to fulfill the latter role. For the long term interests of his own party and the country Rahul should not accept to be part of the Ministry and continue the good work that he has been doing. If at all, he becomes a Minister I would like to see him as Minister for Rural Development or Health or Program Implementation.

Well Congress is fiefdom of Gandhis so he can even take up the post of PM at any time he pleases. Who can stop him? India has been ruined by her own people and the rulers… Gandhis and Co. who were later joined in by SP, BSP, and other regional parties to snatch a piece of the pie.

AS Chuchill said, “Power will go to the hands of rascals, rogues and freebooters. All Indian leaders will be of low calibre and men of straw. They will have sweet tongues and silly hearts. They will fight amongst themselves for power and India will be lost in political squabbles”.

Indians led by Gandhis and Co are walking the path… Keep On Walking

No matter what people think and say about ordinary citizens of India, this election has proved that citizens of India have always been smart and wanted good leadership. Unfortunately in the last 50 years she unable produce educated and clean politicians with nationalistic values. I would say it is due to huge brain drain and bad economic policies we have let thugs and criminals take over our society.

Now that Indian economy is improving, it will bring whole lot of change to everyones lives in India. Unfortunately it again proves that money can buy anything.

Today, the ground reality is that common man is not given a chance to select a leader. Public are thrust upon to select and elect whoever is there in the race with money, muscle power and brutal force , of course with some exceptions. It is not the common Indian citizen but instead, the media is selecting and electing the leaders. The grand old party with more than 100 years of history is after “Rahul Gandhi “, because of the suffix “Gandhi” in his name and being the son of Sonia Gandhi , the congress chief. One way, it is a good sign, public want new and young blood. By keeping aside so many old stalwarts in the congress, our beloved Prime Minister also wants Rahul Gandhi to be part of the cabinet. Of course it is the prerogative of the P.M., to select his ministers. In each and every state, every congress leader has displayed his loyalty to Rahul Gandhi and had shown their sycophancy in posters. If Rahul Gandhi does not carry “Gandhi” suffix in his name, they would not have been after him. Not only these experienced and senior leaders in the party, but also the Media would not have been uttered his name even if he does have very high integrity, honesty, commitment to this country’s welfare and very able administrator. He would have been sidelined, defamed , hit by chapels ( one of the ex-chief minister of Andhra Pradesh had once provoked his followers to hurl chapels on another very important and famous congress statesman and visionary , this is what public say here about that chief minister) had he not carried Gandhi name as suffix and not from the clan of “Nehru-Gandhi” family. Still we see what suffix a Person’s name carries. Very simply example is Mr. Jaipal Reddy “ who is a ex-janata dal leader and was a minister during United front govt., a hard core critic of the Congress party in general and in particular Rajeev Gandhi and Sonia Gandhi, a loyalist of Mr. V.P.Singh “ now enjoys a cabinet ministry in the first phase of ministry formation . There are unfortunate and unlucky congress parliamentary members who were there when the Congress was in difficult situations and not power ,also never left the party nor came from other parties. A simple example is Mr. Undavilli Arun Kumar of Rajahmundry constituency , a honest, straightforward, and hard core congress cadre , a visionary Mr. V. Hanumanth Rao and there are other members of the party who are worthy of getting a cabinet post to serve this country. For a few seconds, let us think Our Rahul Gandhi is only Mr.Rahul , then neither the party would not have bothered even to give a B-Form at the time of nomination in spite of his best abilities to bring the crowd, nor the Media would have created this hypo about his post in the cabinet. One thing is very clear days are changing and we have to change , let us get rid of this sycophancy. It is every body’s secret about Sonia Gandhi’s contention to become the P.M., of India what are the facts. Even the Media wants to conceal the facts from the common Indian citizen, they could not and she could not become the P.M., last time. Let us build the nation and ensure the better standard of living to people below the poverty line. I wish Mr.Rahul all the best ,

Nobody can question about his hardwork and honesty towards his designated portfolio, but another thing, is Sonia Gandhi is less powerful compare to PM or other ministers and now Rahul added, why they need portfolio?

As he has a strong family background, if you observe properly, all his young stars came from only strong family background, he did not considered or considering who are working for the partly silently and honestly without any background only for devotion and partriotism.

As it is he is more than a PM. He should be kept himself out of Ministry, working for Party mainly and side by side try to imbibe decency, which he himself having, amidst the
political workers, leaders of all the parties. He should be a idol to all. We require such a personality.

Yes, it is time for Rahul Gandhi to take up a cabinet post. Since he is Mr. Manmohan Singh’s choice and out of respect for his Mother, Ms Sonia Gandhi, and with reverence to his Father,Grand Mother & Great grand Father, Mr. Manmohan must decide the post in consultation with the young Gandhi. This will help in building up the image of Mr. Manmohan Singh’s team.

I feel that instead of Rahul Gandhi, other young leaders should be given a chance.
now youth has shown faith in congress and congress should boost it by giving chances to people other than rahul gandhi, people who was there with congress in grim situation and not in power.

this is in reference to the previous post made by me….i regret the errors in grammar….what i meant was…A leader like Rahul gandhi who is a selfmade man in my eyes, even though he is from a policial family, will definitely work for the betterment of the country. Otherwise being from a “Gandhi” family why would Rahul Gandhi work in London with a Strategy Consultancy firm Monitor Group? Moreover, before returning to India in late 2002 he ran an engineering and technology outsourcing firm in Mumbai. He knows the real agendas of our nation.

Should Rahul Gandhi join the cabinet?

I think, the question should be asked in other way. And that is:

Should Rahul Gandhi be offered a position in a cabinet?

And my answer would be:
“WHY”? Does he own the country called “India”? Does he have the qualification to run any cabinet portfolia? Does he really believe in Democratic institution?

We live in a different era and in 21st century. Let us come out of old mentality of ‘making a person’ more important then the country. If one analyses Rahul’s different aspects and attitudes towards different issues of country and society, one might notice that his only occupation, aim and thinking is to use his family background and name to rise to top position in country to RULE and not to SERVE. Most the media people use the word ‘YUVRAJ” for him and this shows where we are. Are we trying to bring old traditional “Raja-shahi” back and forget the struggle and sacrifice of 50 years of 20th century to make India “INDEPANDENT”?

Rahul Gandhi has to prove himself. He should have some definate thoughts and clear vision for the future of the country and not for himself. Let him have sometime to shape his thoughts and direction where he wants to take this country. Let us, all Indians, make sure that he has that capacity, vision and will to lead the country on the peak of prosparity.

And then, we should ask the question which is at the top of this discussion forum

Thanks

Narendra Doshi

It is tragic that Indian politics has failed to produce a series of healthy debates among the major political parties to produce top class leaders. The impotence of the BJP (in opposition to Congress) in the recent elections has allowed the surfacing of either raw inexperienced or feeble, octogenerian leadership–both dangerous for the future of India. Rahul Gandhi is energetic, but utterly inexperienced. He is groomed by mother Sonia on the strength of money coming out of Swiss banks, not on the strength of hard knocks of regional or national politics.
Ministry of Broadcasting will provide him a safe political haven, while experts will guide him to make the right kind of speeches. Let him grow independently in India’s school of poverty. Don’t draw him in the political game as yet under the protective hands of Sonia and the fawning aura of Dr. Manmohan Singh. Rahul could become too dependent to be India’s future leader.
