I would add one distinction to the mix: most people belief of the efficacy of fiscal stimulus is based on the 30s. These were times when governments were worth 30% of the economies. Nowadays, governments such as France are worth 56% of the economy. The game has changed and they cannot go on expanding from that. (but as the article says, the political will to unfurl government is not there. people on the continent are simply not ready.)

It looks like the survival of the Euro is for the benefit of a few. The south is like Mexico to the US and should be left to do their own thing with their profligate ways and best of luck to them. I have been to the northern European countries as well as the south vis Italy, Spain and it is obvious that the North is well disciplined and clean and tidy compared to the south. It’s like comparing apples with onions.

(I’ve been saying for months a north/south split is the least bad option). Money would initially flood north, but a balance would be found. Indeed, the northern banks – which are the ONLY banks – would be made safer.

As for the Eurocrats, there must still be offices in Brussels beavering away as to how to get the Balkans on board.

Germany joined reluctantly in 1999 blackmailed as a”good European” by.. guess who. A comment at the time was :”We pay our pension contributions in Dm and will get our pensions in Lira.”
