Obama made the same mistake LBJ made in Viet Nam.
He listened to his generals and not his political advisers.

It's possible that the US presence in Afghanistan made it possible to determine where OBL was hiding. The US presence in Afghanistan also provides some geopolitical advantages because it shares a border with Iran.

If these things and other lesser considerations were worth the the massive expenditure of cash and bodies, then Obama's decision was solid. If not, then Obama's decision was indeed a blunder.

The matter is debatable and we may never know the answer to the question because there is no way to know how events would have played out if Obama had instead scaled back military operations in Afghanistan.

A commendable analysis, good hindsight.

But the president has been awarded the much coveted Nobel Peace Prize for what he did. Right? (mtd1943)
