Both Putin and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, for example, have stopped labelling all opposition forces as “terrorists,” which suggests that some moderate groups on the ground might be recognized by Moscow as legitimate players. ”

What complete and utter BS…. Russia is not about to recognise US/KSA/Qatar/Trkish backed terrorist scum as responsible partners for a future post-war political settlement. Russia needs to send a clear message that Western/GCC supported takfiris have NO place in Syrias political life.

Additionally this garbage about “Assad must go” is simply NOT going to happen. Only the Syrian people get to decide who leads them, and Assad has every right to stand for election. Given that the takfiris have limited support in the country, and that Assads governemnt has fought hard to protect her people and religious minorities, I think I know who the average Syrian would choose to vote for. If the aforementioned foreign supporters of the anti-Assad regime change don’t like that outcome, then that is their problem….

I don’t know how any refugees can go home to Syria if Assad is still in power. I don’t know all the different factions in the area but Assad seems want everyone dead or gone.

Russia plays the same game as US, Iran, Saudi Arabia and others, yet only the former is portrayed as self-serving.

The immediate downsides are a unification of the anti-Assad groups, a call for a no-fly zone to protect those groups and a Turkey promoting those options in an excellent geographic position to work with U.S.-led forces to make that happen.
