UK sex abuse victim apologizes to Thatcher party treasurer

LONDON (Reuters) – A child rape victim apologised on Friday to an ally of former prime minister Margaret Thatcher who had been falsely identified on the Internet as his abuser, after days of furious speculation of a high-level paedophile ring in Britain.

Steven Messham, who had told the BBC he had been repeatedly sexually abused as a child in social care by a leading political figure in the late 1970s, said former Conservative Party treasurer Lord Alistair McAlpine was not among his attackers.

Thatcher’s party treasurer denies UK child abuse

LONDON, Nov 9 (Reuters) – The treasurer of the Conservative
Party under former Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher denied on
Friday allegations he had sexually abused children in the 1970s,
casting doubt on a BBC report that stoked fears of an elite
British paedophile ring.

Lord Alistair McAlpine, a Thatcher ally who served as
Conservative treasurer from 1975 to 1990, said ill-informed
commentators had wrongly named him in a “media frenzy” as the
mystery paedophile accused by one victim in a BBC report on the
rape of children in social care.

Cameron studying Conservative child abuse claim

LONDON (Reuters) – Prime Minister David Cameron is looking at an allegation by a paedophile victim who told the BBC that an unidentified Conservative Party figure had abused children in social care during the 1970s, the premier’s spokesman said on Monday.

The unmasking of late BBC star presenter Jimmy Savile as one of Britain’s most prolific sex offenders has prompted concern that some powerful paedophiles from the 1970s and 1980s may have used their influence to shield them from punishment.

Midterm blues: doubts assail Cameron

BIRMINGHAM, England, Oct 9 (Reuters) – Even Prime Minister
David Cameron sounds unsure he can win the next election.

Grappling with a stagnant economy and upstaged lately by the
boisterous mayor of London, a former schoolmate who seems to
want his job, Cameron faces a divided Conservative Party whose
members are worried they face electoral defeat in 2015.

Cameron backs referendum on new Britain-EU deal

BIRMINGHAM (Reuters) – A referendum on Britain’s ties with the European Union would be the best way of agreeing a fresh settlement with the 27-member bloc, Prime Minister David Cameron said on Tuesday, as pressure mounts within his party for a vote.

The Conservative Party’s restive “eurosceptic” right wing is clamoring to claw back powers from Brussels. Some want a simple vote on staying in the EU or leaving, fearing that the party could lose votes to the anti-Europe UK Independence Party at the 2015 election.

UK’s Osborne to slash welfare but quiet on growth

BIRMINGHAM, England (Reuters) – Britain’s Conservatives would slash government spending on welfare by 10 billion pounds ($16 billion) a year if re-elected, finance minister George Osborne said on Monday, though he offered few ideas on how to bring the economy out of recession.

The 2015 election is likely to be decided on the health of the economy, the pace of deficit reduction and the areas of spending and taxation on which each party would focus to balance stretched public finances.
