British spymaster John Sawers, head of MI6, to step down

LONDON, June 26 (Reuters) – Britain’s foreign spymaster, who
at times quoted Machiavelli and fought off demands to ease
secrecy around his MI6 intelligence agency, will step down in
November after five years, the Foreign Office said on Thursday.

John Sawers, an ex-career diplomat, became the first
outsider to head the Secret Intelligence Service (SIS) in 41
years when he took over in November 2009 under then-prime
minister Gordon Brown.

Cameron’s battle over Juncker has sapped UK’s EU influence -coalition minister

LONDON (Reuters) – The way British Prime Minister David Cameron has fought Jean-Claude Juncker’s candidacy for the European Commission president has undermined Britain’s position in Europe, a minister in his own coalition government said on Wednesday.

UKIP poised for victory in Europe vote

LONDON (Reuters) – Britain’s anti-EU UKIP party has chalked up strong gains in elections to the European Parliament, polling more strongly than Prime Minister David Cameron’s Conservative party and opposition Labour party in early results on Sunday.

With 15 out of 73 seats declared, the UK Independence Party, which wants Britain to leave the European Union, had won six seats, the Conservatives five seats and Labour four.

Prince Charles provokes diplomatic dispute with Russia by comparing Putin to Hitler

LONDON/MOSCOW (Reuters) – Prince Charles’s comparison of Vladimir Putin with Nazi leader Adolf Hitler triggered a diplomatic row on Thursday when Moscow scolded the heir to the British throne for what it said was an outrageous attempt to sully Russia’s reputation over Ukraine.

During a trip to Canada, the 65-year-old prince told a Jewish woman who fled from Poland during World War Two that in Ukraine “Putin is doing just about the same as Hitler”, according to the Daily Mail newspaper.

At least that is what research by a team of academics from the University of Cambridge, HEC Paris and Vanderbilt University, Nashville, Tennessee, shows.
