Netflix takes on language challenge in next phase of European expansion

Iliad still in the hunt for T-Mobile U.S.

PARIS (Reuters) – French low-cost telecom operator Iliad may improve its $15 billion offer for T-Mobile US but has set specific limits on how much money it would raise to fund any deal.

Iliad will hit sales, mobile targets early – CFO

PARIS (Reuters) – French low-cost telecoms carrier Iliad (ILD.PA: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz) is ahead of schedule on its 2015 goal to reach annual sales of 4 billion euros ($5.3 billion) and will probably have 15 percent mobile market share by the end of this year, its finance chief said.

“We are ahead of the goals in our strategic plan,” Chief Financial Officer Thomas Reynaud said on Friday in an interview after second-quarter results.

Concerns over U.S. business overshadow Alcatel-Lucent results

PARIS (Reuters) – Progress in Alcatel-Lucent’s efforts to end years of losses was eclipsed on Thursday by concerns over weaker demand for the telecom equipment maker’s core networking products and a potential slowdown in its vital U.S. market.

Alcatel posted quarterly sales largely in line with expectations and its operating margin improved. But its main listed competitors, Sweden’s Ericsson and Finland’s Nokia, both beat forecasts in the same period and forecast higher sales in the second half.

France’s Alcatel-Lucent improves margins in second quarter

PARIS, July 31 (Reuters) – Telecom equipment maker
Alcatel-Lucent improved its margins in the second
quarter because of a cost-cutting programme and a boost from
higher sales of fourth-generation mobile gear in China and the
United States.

The Paris-based company, which competes with Sweden’s
Ericsson and China’s Huawei, confirmed its
objective of returning to positive free cash flow by the end of
2015, the key promise made in June 2013 by Chief Executive

French regulator rejects applications for free TV channels

PARIS (Reuters) – France’s broadcast regulator rejected applications from TF1, M6, and Vivendi’s Canal+ to shift three of their respective pay-television channels to free-to-air, dealing a setback to the companies.

The CSA regulator said in a statement on Tuesday that it based the decision largely on the fact that the advertising market remained weak and there were not enough marketing dollars to go around for free-to-air channels.

Orange’s network investments help ward off low-cost rivals in France

PARIS, July 29 (Reuters) – Telecoms operator Orange
has begun to see the fruits of investing in faster
fibre and mobile broadband networks in its key home market, as
its high-end focus insulates it from aggresively priced fixed
plans offered by rival Bouygues.

As it posted in line second-quarter results, France’s
largest carrier said that some 60 percent of new mobile
customers were signing up for high-end plans that include 4G and
that 50,000 new customers had signed up to its fibre broadband
offers, taking the total to 415,000.

Publicis says annual growth target will be hard to meet

PARIS (Reuters) – French advertising agency Publicis warned it would be “very difficult” to meet its annual target of 4 percent organic sales growth after a second-quarter slowdown caused in part by the failure of its planned merger with Omnicom in May.

Publicis said on Tuesday its second-quarter sales fell 1.76 billion euros ($2.5 billion) from 1.79 billion a year earlier, missing an analysts’ forecast of 1.88 billion euros, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.
