Betis coach Mel fears Real ‘raging bull’

MADRID (Reuters) – Living in one of the main centres of Spain’s bull-fighting culture, Seville natives know a thing or two about dealing with the angry beasts but Real Betis coach Pepe Mel would rather not have to in La Liga on Saturday.

Betis, the second-division champions who are based in the Andalusian capital, play at Real Madrid’s Bernabeu stadium (2030 GMT) after the world’s richest club by income were held to a 0-0 draw at another promoted side, Sporting Gijon, in their opening game of the campaign last weekend.

Unconvincing Atletico make winning La Liga start

MADRID (Reuters) – Atletico Madrid got their La Liga campaign up and running when Antoine Griezmann’s deflected free kick secured an unconvincing 1-0 home win over promoted Las Palmas on Saturday.

Griezmann’s strike clipped the Las Palmas wall on its way into the net in the 17th minute but Atletico struggled to create further chances and the visitors, back in Spain’s top flight for the first time in 13 years, made them sweat in the second half.

Analysis – TV deal an extra incentive for La Liga’s lesser lights

MADRID (Reuters) – When La Liga kicks off on Friday, some of Spain’s more modest clubs will have even greater incentive to fight for their top-flight status thanks to a new framework for the collective and more lucrative sale of television rights.

Unlike in other major European leagues, La Liga teams had been negotiating individual deals with broadcasters, a system that allowed heavyweights Real Madrid and Barcelona to hoover up roughly half the available TV cash between them.

Barca facing tough task to retain La Liga title

MADRID (Reuters) – Champions Barcelona begin their bid for a sixth La Liga title in eight years at Athletic Bilbao on Sunday knowing that fellow heavyweights Real Madrid could, unusually, be just one of several challengers for their crown.

Under new coach Rafa Benitez, Real are desperate to recover from a 2014-15 season when they failed to win major silverware and will be looking to FIFA Ballon d’Or holder Cristiano Ronaldo to break more scoring records and hoping world record signing Gareth Bale can rediscover his best form.
