Analysis – Real juggernaut in need of repair post Mourinho

MADRID (Reuters) – Florentino Perez’s decision to hire Jose Mourinho to coach his beloved Real Madrid in 2010 was the fruit of the construction magnate’s obsession with winning the 10th European crown that has eluded the club since 2002.

The bespectacled 66-year-old, who has splurged more than 400 million euros ($514 million) of the club’s money on players since returning to the presidency in 2009, was also desperate to end the domestic and European domination of Real’s bitter rivals Barcelona.

Simeone throws huge party after King’s Cup triumph

MADRID (Reuters) – Atletico Madrid coach Diego Simeone invited fans to gather in the centre of the Spanish capital later on Saturday after he engineered one of the greatest nights in the club’s history in Friday’s stunning King’s Cup final win against Real Madrid.

The combative Argentine has transformed Atletico since taking over midway through last season and the 2-1 comeback triumph, made all the sweeter as it was at Real’s Bernabeu arena, was their first success against their vastly wealthier and more prestigious neighbours in 14 years.

Real and Mourinho contemplate ‘disastrous’ season

MADRID (Reuters) – Real Madrid and Jose Mourinho were sifting through the debris of what the Portuguese coach termed a “disastrous” 2012-13 campaign after Friday’s King’s Cup final defeat left the world’s richest club without a major trophy for the season.

The 2-1 reverse to Atletico Madrid at their own Bernabeu stadium meant Mourinho, widely expected to move on at the end of this term, finished a season without significant silverware for the first time in his otherwise glittering career.
