Sevilla, Valencia face stiff test of credentials

MADRID (Reuters) – Atletico Madrid proved last season that with an inspirational coach, a group of committed players and an enthusiastic support, it is possible to get the better of wealthy Real Madrid and Barcelona in La Liga.

Sevilla and Valencia, both sporadically able to keep pace with Real and Barca domestically in the past, have made solid starts to the season under Unai Emery and Nuno Espirito Santo respectively, raising hopes among their long-suffering fans that a genuine title challenge is possible.

Isco keen to impress during Bale absence

MADRID (Reuters) – While Gareth Bale is fully expected to regain his place in the Real Madrid side when he returns from injury, team mate Isco is making the most of his chance to prove his worth on the pitch.

Coach Carlo Ancelotti has made it clear that a fit Bale, who became the world’s most expensive player when he joined Real in 2013, will always be in his preferred starting lineup in a three-pronged attack with Cristiano Ronaldo and Karim Benzema.

Lowly Cornella in the path of Real juggernaut

MADRID (Reuters) – When third-tier Cornella were drawn to play holders Real Madrid in the last 32 of the King’s Cup, players and officials from the Barcelona-based club celebrated wildly what they called “winning the lottery”.

Wednesday’s first leg match will be played at the nearby stadium of top-flight Espanyol and will provide some welcome extra revenue for tiny Cornella, whose annual budget of around 1 million euros (1.3 million US dollars) is dwarfed by Real’s income of more than half a billion.

Rampant Real riding high after ‘Clasico’ triumph

MADRID (Reuters) – Real Madrid’s decision to sell midfielders Xabi Alonso and Angel Di Maria left many scratching their heads and consecutive La Liga defeats as well as a reverse to Atletico Madrid in the Spanish Super Cup set alarm bells ringing at the Bernabeu.

Toni Kroos, who joined from Bayern Munich while Alonso went the other way, was seen as a poor substitute for the experienced Spain midfielder, while James Rodriguez, top scorer at the World Cup finals in Brazil with six goals, seemed to lack Di Maria’s intensity and eye for a killer pass.
