Soccer-Colombia beat Ivory Coast to close on knockout round

BRASILIA, June 19 (Reuters) – Colombia moved to the brink of their first appearance in the World Cup knockout round in nearly a quarter of a century when they beat Ivory Coast 2-1 in another action-packed World Cup clash on Thursday to take firm control of Group C.

The South Americans, who fell to Cameroon at the last-16 stage in Italy in 1990 with a team featuring the likes of Rene Higuita and Carlos Valderrama, had not qualified for soccer’s global showpiece since 1998.

Dream ends for Spain’s golden boys, youngsters wait

By Iain Rogers

(Reuters) – The poignant lyrics of John Lennon’s 1970 song “God” capture how some of Spain’s golden generation of players and decorated coach Vicente del Bosque must be feeling after their shock first-round exit from the World Cup on Wednesday.

“The dream is over. What can I say? The dream is over. Yesterday.”

Lennon’s words partly referred to the breakup of The Beatles, a cataclysmic event in the history of popular music, and Spain’s failure in Brazil thanks to defeats to the Netherlands and Chile in their opening two group games has sent similar shockwaves around the global soccer community.

World Cup exit end of an era for stunned Spanish

By Iain Rogers

(Reuters) – Spain’s shock World Cup exit on Wednesday marks an ignominious end to a glittering six-year run during which the Iberian nation swept all before them to claim a debut global title and back-to-back European crowns.

Spain’s first major success came at the 1964 European Championship before fans of La Roja endured more than four decades of under-achievement that finally ended with a 1-0 victory over Germany in the final of Euro 2008.

Del Bosque under pressure to ring the changes

BRASILIA (Reuters) – Since Friday’s shock 5-1 World Cup reverse to Group B rivals Netherlands, Spain coach Vicente del Bosque has been bombarded with advice about personnel changes he needs to make before Wednesday’s Chile clash.

It remains to be seen whether the genial 63-year-old will make any adjustments following the holders’ woeful second-half performance in their opening match in Salvador but he certainly has plenty of talent to call on if he decides tweaks are needed.
