MADRID, April 22 (Reuters) – Holders Real Madrid kept alive their dream of a record-extending 11th European crown when Javier Hernandez’s late strike in a tense clash at home to 10-man Atletico Madrid secured a 1-0 win and a Champions League semi-final place on Wednesday.

After last week’s quarter-final first leg at the Calderon ended 0-0, the return at the Bernabeu appeared to be heading for extra time until James Rodriguez slipped a pass through to Cristiano Ronaldo in the 88th minute.

Each picked up a late booking in the clash at Atletico’s Calderon stadium, a repeat of last year’s final and the seventh time they have faced each other this term, that means they will be suspended for the second leg at the Bernabeu on April 22.

Ancelotti urges more consistency after Real held at Atletico

MADRID (Reuters) – Holders Real Madrid will need to maintain their intensity for the whole of next week’s return leg if they are to get past Atletico Madrid into the Champions League semi-finals, coach Carlo Ancelotti said on Tuesday.
