Soccer-Emery-inspired Sevilla well set for Barca visit

MADRID, April 9 (Reuters) – Sevilla coach Unai Emery is one of the more eccentric characters in La Liga but the Andalusian club’s success this season suggests there is plenty of method in the Basque-born 43-year-old’s apparent madness.

Prowling the touchline during games, Emery’s frantic arm gestures, wild eyes and bellowed commands clearly inspire his players rather than distract them.

Treble-chasing Barca riding high before crucial run

MADRID (Reuters) – Fired by the goals of Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez, treble-chasing Barcelona are riding high before four games over 10 days that could make or break coach Luis Enrique’s first season in charge.

Wednesday’s 4-0 La Liga victory over Almeria, which maintained their four-point advantage over Real Madrid at the top, was a more than satisfactory warm-up for Saturday’s game at fifth-placed Sevilla.

Suarez propels Barca seven points clear of Real

MADRID (Reuters) – In-form Luis Suarez struck twice to help fire La Liga leaders Barcelona to a 4-0 home victory over struggling Almeria on Wednesday that stretched their advantage over second-placed Real Madrid to seven points.

Barca seized control at the Nou Camp before Lionel Messi, who had not scored in three matches since his double against Eibar three weeks ago, skipped in from the right wing in the 33rd minute and whipped a left-foot effort inside the far post.

Atletico hard on Real’s heels, Sevilla down Levante

MADRID (Reuters) – Atletico Madrid made a typically aggressive start to lay the foundations for a 2-0 victory at home to mid-table Real Sociedad on Tuesday that lifted the champions to within two points of second-placed Real Madrid.

Diego Simeone’s men came roaring out of the blocks at the Calderon and, after Arda Turan had thumped a volley against the post in the second minute, Koke’s inswinging delivery from a corner moments later was headed into his own net by Sociedad defender Mikel Gonzalez.

Ronaldo hits five, Barca eke out win at Celta

MADRID (Reuters) – Real Madrid forward Cristiano Ronaldo hit his quickest hat-trick on the way to netting his first five-goal haul in a 9-1 drubbing of Granada on Sunday but there was no change at the top of La Liga as leaders Barcelona edged a 1-0 win at Celta Vigo.

Portugal captain Ronaldo struck three times in eight minutes in the first half and added two headers after the break on a festive, sun-drenched afternoon at the Bernabeu to help fire Real to their biggest victory in almost half a century.
