Soccer-Dortmund’s Klopp rues missed chances after Real drubbing

MADRID, April 2 (Reuters) – Borussia Dortmund coach Juergen Klopp was left rueing mistakes and missed chances as he dismissed suggestions his team had been outplayed in Wednesday’s 3-0 Champions League reverse at Real Madrid.

Dortmund were punished by Gareth Bale’s third-minute opener after leaving too much space between the lines, Klopp complained at a news conference after the quarter-final, first leg at the Bernabeu.

Martino, Simeone renew old rivalry in Europe

MADRID (Reuters) – Barcelona coach Gerardo Martino and his Atletico Madrid counterpart Diego Simeone clashed as rival players in their native Argentina and there will be no quarter given when they meet in the last eight of the Champions League on Tuesday.

A callow Simeone was not yet 18 when he faced Martino, nearly 10 years his senior, in a league match between Velez Sarsfield and Newell’s Old Boys in January 1988, when Martino was sent off for a challenge on fellow midfielder Simeone, who was himself dismissed 10 minutes later.

The hard-fought victory at the San Mames, only a second home defeat for Bilbao this season, restored Atletico’s one-point advantage over champions Barcelona, who won 1-0 at Espanyol in the earlier kickoff thanks to a Lionel Messi penalty.
