Leave Bale alone and let him settle, Ronaldo urges

MADRID (Reuters) – Cristiano Ronaldo knows a thing or two about high expectations and the Portuguese forward has urged people not to put excessive pressure on his new Real Madrid team mate Gareth Bale and allow him time to settle in.

Bale succeeded Ronaldo as the world’s most expensive player when he joined Real from Tottenham Hotspur for a fee of 100 million euros (84 million pounds) in the close season but he has barely featured after being sidelined with a thigh strain.

Soccer-Avenging angel Schuster plots Bernabeu punishment

MADRID, Oct 17 (Reuters) – Bernd Schuster was ignominiously dumped as coach of Real Madrid in late 2008 and the plain-speaking German is eager for revenge when his Malaga side visit the Bernabeu in La Liga on Saturday (1400 GMT).

Sacked after he suggested it was impossible for Real to beat arch rivals Barcelona at the Nou Camp, Schuster believes Real’s stuttering start to their domestic campaign under new coach Carlo Ancelotti this season proves they are vulnerable.

Soccer-Spain show versatility in sealing World Cup berth

MADRID, Oct 16 (Reuters) – If Spain have at times been too predictable during their successful World Cup qualification campaign, the holders proved they can adapt when necessary in Tuesday’s 2-0 win at home to Georgia in Albacete.

As expected, Georgia opted for the ultra-defensive tactics the majority of Spain’s opponents fall back on but coach Vicente Del Bosque’s decision to add width and pace to his formation from the start paid off handsomely.
